Yeah, I think ROTK (and the entire trilogy, for that matter) proves that very popular movies don't necessarily mean that they're less substantial than other kinds of films.
And emma, I haven't yet had the pleasure of
Lost in Translation, but you must see
Girl with a Pearl Earring. If you like Scarlett Johanssen's candid performance in
Translation, you'll like her more formal, restrained work in
Earring. She is now on my list of favourite actresses. BTW,
Earring is the only Oscar nominated movie I've seen. I'm been so damn behind living in the cornfields.
