Alan Moore, who really ought to know better than you considering he wrote the book, describes it as "pornography".

Here's one relevant bit of an interview which makes it very clear, repeatedly, that it is porn they are dealing with:

Now, whether it's intellectual or not, I have a very hard time believing that your mother would knowingly buy you porn. More likely she doesn't realize what she's been asked to get you for Christmas. And yes, that's more than a little disturbing.
