Over here, we use smooching similarly, although the expression to use if you want to gross people out is 'tonsil hockey'. That usually gets around the same level of 'ick' factor. However, as most (but not all) of us who have been exchanging the word in the last few days are all North American, oddly enough, we find 'snogging' to be quaint and charming.

And to me it's a new expression. I had never heard it before we started this
