I was thinking of something similar the other day. What if your brain capacity could be utilized in a computer network, and you got payed for it? You simply jack in for 8 hours a day, (and now that you mention it, why not make it during the sleep cycle?), and then have the remaining 16 hours to do whatever you want. There would be absolutely no stress at work, 'cause you'd be unconscious the entire time, but also no strive for greater success. It's kinda like the human batteries from the Matrix meets the unconscious/programmed hookers from the Neuromancer. Sounds great to me!
Of course, I haven't thought of how one could use the concept as a plot for a game...
