Funny, here in Germany we don't really wear socks in open-toed sandals (maybe a few misguided grown-ups might do that, but most people can tell you that socks don't belong in sandals. You learn that in your childhood, you know.). But North Americans (specifically, people from the US) have the reputation of wearing white tennis socks, even when wearing sandals. And they do that even when they are in the US!
