Exactly. Usually, you have to do something rather non-sensical (such as pulling a lever ten times, finding a hidden hotspot, etc.) and you get a funny, or unexpected, reward. For instance, in TLJ,
Spoiler:if you use the leaf (from the plant next to April's room) on Abnaxus's lawn, you unlock the Book of secrets, with artwork and out-takes (which also gets unlocked when you finish the game anyway, so maybe that's not a great example -- but you get the idea).
I'm not sure how people learn about Easter eggs; I think developers often drop hints around the time of the game's release (for instance, there was an elaborate series of
riddles to solve to find the Easter eggs in Riven).
