I don't baby talk, but I do talk to animals. I never thought of this as remotely unusual until I overheard a roommate's girlfriend exclaim "Jack! Scott talks to that cat like it has good sense!". I've simply found that if you treat animals as though they're intelligent, they are much more likely to try to live up to your expectations.
Besides, if I were forced to choose between talking to the cat and talking to that particular roommate's girlfriend, I'd take the cat every single time.

You might be displaying an innate aptitude for sign language. Have you ever taken a course in that? Some people pick it up very easily.
