Nah, number has nothing to do with it. My roleplaying group's channel only ever has 4 people in it (and occasionally 1 or 2 guests) , yet we manage to chat up a veritable storm. Ask Pink.

I'm always willing to reply to any conversation that looks like I can add to it, but whenever I go in nobody's talking. So I wait around until somebody says something I can respond to... which tends to take a while. But anyhoo.

As for "ADD"... I have to admit a complaint... there's a few people who have this IMHO kind of annoying tendency to

type a few words per line
instead of putting it all on one line
which makes it incredibly hard
to keep up with the conversation
you see
