Elves and hobbits, orcs and magical rings, ents, goblins and the situations in a modern adventure tale. These things have been inspired by the Norse myth, but the treatment is Tolkien's. Also, his writing style is far better than that of most paperback fantasy writers and some 'great writers' (if Joseph Conrad's works that are rife with horrible, just horrible figurative language and a downright annoying narrative voice can be regarded as great literature, so can The Lord of the Rings).
