Aside from the fact that it was obvious he was working for some sort of aliens, and he wanted you to work with him, there was little else that actually made sense about the ending of Half-Life. Why was Gordon chosen? Who is it really that G-Man was working for? Where the hell does Gordon go when accepting the job? Are the Xen important?
It didn't make sense, because they hoped they'd get to explain it later. But it really didn't matter when developing the game, because the most important thing was to make the game good. The story could be evolved if the game was a hit. But I doubt they assumed the game would be a hit, and therefore made the ending so damn ambigious(spelling?).
