It's a reference to
Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson, in which the protagonist, "Jim" hides in a barrel of apples to overhear Long John Silver talk of mutiny. In fact, one of the chapters of the novel is entitled "What I Heard in the Apple Barrel".
