In all honesty, I know exactly what you mean. However, I don't think Jackson intended it to be funny. I believe he intended it to be exciting and suspenseful. Either way, he failed. I didn't find the stampede to be funny OR exciting.

But I'm still not convinced that he could have done that much better. Sure, cutting off the odd part could have make it less taxing, but a remake of an average B-movie (albeit a classic) can only be that good.
You may be right, but at the same time...it should be "that good" and not less good. If the movie was about two hours long, written with a sense of pacing and character more like the original, then combined with superior acting and special effects...you have one hell of a fun B-movie!
