It goes a little something like this:
Wireless Adapter for Xbox 360 (what Lucien said) -> Access Point(basically a wireless Switch/Bridge, as Huz said) -> Your Modem
Wireless Routers are more functional and more expensive, but I tend to like the setup where you have a wired router, for your wired network, and put an Access Point on it to "bridge" between your wired and wireless networks. Safer for security, and you can have the best of both worlds.
Since you probably use your modem for a computer, or multiple computers you get this setup:
