It's simply not his line. Artists draw their cartoons to what they're comfortable with. Looking over the history of Calvin and Hobbes and how his art style changed to suit his shorthand, it'd be hard to believe he'd produce another regular strip in a seperate style with a sloppier approach to line and composition. Watterson is if anything a perfectionist. All the little things about this cartoon signal to me the work of another artist - it's simply not as professional as you'd expect from someone with his experience. The large snowy panel being a good indicator.
