I think the next step in dialogues is to integrate them into the gameplay and not make them a separate 'thing'. For example, in Max Payne 2 Max talks to some characters while moving around. Of course, MP2 doesn't offer any choice in dialogues, and I'm not sure excatly how would you go about choosing dialogue options while occupied with other things. But I'm sure there's a way.
Maybe something like the quick chat menus in Return to Castle Wolfenstein and other multiplayer team games.
