That's one of the modern version. Cinnammon was, and is one of the more expensive spices (the most expensive is probably saffron, because that is harvested from Crocus, and only under very special conditions)

I guess the lemon might indeed have been added to avoid scurvy (because they took lemons with them because of that, anyway)

But trust me, the main reason for adding rum to the water (because actually the rum was added to the water, and not the other way around), to cover up the nasty taste of the water.
