First, good guys are hard to come by and when you find one you shouldn't let him go. The only person you have to see in the mirror every morning is yourself, so if you're truly happy with him it doesn't matter what other people think...family included!
Secondly, it's obvious that your cat loved you very much if he crawled in pain to the place where he felt safest and most comfortable: underneath your bed. Anyone who isn't touched by your story needs to do some serious self-examination regarding their soul...or lack thereof.
