One step forward, one step back

I am rather surprised that this game has not been reviewed yet, so here we go. Obviously, this is the most ambitious of Sam Barlow’s three projects, which shows in the rather polished production. After all, we almost have enough material for 3 movies here. I say almost, because some of the scenes are rehearsals and actor tests, as none of these movies are released, so the story goes.

While the game is a step forward budget and production-wise, it is absolutely a step back in terms of gameplay. Clicking to people’s faces or objects to find other clips is hardly an investigation. It feels more like unlocking random scenes than discovering secrets in a detective work.

The mystery part of the game admittedly lies in its hidden layer, which the player probably randomly discovers. That discovery is an unexpected twist with real shock value, and provides a memorable gaming moment that will not be easily forgotten. All of the main themes of the movies are connected to the hidden layer of the game, as player will discover in time.

As for the themes of three movies, I gotta admit they are not my cup of tea, and I would not choose to watch any of them. Moreover, the overuse of sex scenes, particularly in the first movie, gets rather cheap as one progresses. Honestly, at one point I felt like I was watching a Netflix drama, rather than a piece of art. But then again, these all come down to personal tastes.

All in all, this game is an enjoyable experience for the fans of FMVs and Sam Barlow’s games, despite gameplay falls short of its predecessors.
