Review of Blade Runner by emric
a stunning companion piece to the film and great adventure game in its own right
This is a really good companion experience to the 1982 film. Made in 1997, this game perfectly captures the feel of the Blade Runner world that the film portrays—and that’s no easy feat. You play a different Blade Runner, Ray McCoy, but occasional references to Deckard are included. The approach of telling a different story set in the same world worked well.
The art direction is absolutely outstanding and except for looking a little patchy, holds up well by today’s standards better than you might think. The sweeping screen transitions look great. I don’t remember seeing this effect used even in newer games. It comes across looking ahead of it’s time.
The voice acting is amazingly strong and adds a whole lot to the overall experience. Much more than in most adventure games!
At times the story was a bit complex and difficult to follow & overall the game is a bit on the short side.
I’m personally not a fan of adventure games having multiple endings based on your choices throughout the game. Blade Runner has 13 different endings, which is pretty extreme! I know it means replay value is enhanced, but I never feel like replaying significant portions again after I’ve finished it the first time. So instead I just watched a few of the other endings on youtube
But overall this really is a fantastic achievement in adventure gaming.
