Cute, super-simple game

I quite like the concept of the game and it is visually appealing and relaxing. I think it might be a good thing for kids and I have seen other people enjoy it more. I think the final game had very nice subtle sign-posting and hints to get you through the game (after the game I played the 2012 demo which was very similar although had a bit less than half the game and less sign-posting - I don’t think the 2012 demo adds anything, maybe a bit of slightly more challenging content).

I generally found it pretty simple and usually the number of options were pretty limited. It took me just under an hour to go through both the main game and the 2012 demo with occasional random clicking. There are some nice story concepts in there, although without any text or dialogue it is left kinda ambiguous. Some of the story concepts are a bit dark, but I don’t think they would be upsetting to a young child because I don’t think they would understand why it could be upsetting.

There was one timing-based puzzle that felt slightly tight to me (there were two other puzzles with timing elements but they felt super generous - the first one was still generous but I missed the timing once or twice while figuring it out).

Maybe I’m just too comfortable with these kinds of visual puzzles but this felt too straight-forward and minimally story-driven for me to really enjoy it or recommend it.

A beautiful story with great imagery and writing

But it is essentially a movie. I felt much more immersed in Dear Esther and more immersed even in Gone Home (although I found the Gone Home story trite). I think this may be my favorite walking simulator/game-movie, but as a game I found it very thin. The most game-like elements tended to be annoying. It was totally linear. It’s a poor video game and a lovely movie.

Simple exploration platformer with a pleasant story

As the reviewer points out, there is a bit of platforming. I found the platforming to be quite light, although the controls aren’t great. The flight mechanic is very nice when you’re soaring, but also doesn’t control that tightly. It’s a shame the flight mechanic doesn’t get used more.

I found the walking animation quite stilted and the story, while pleasant, is a bit generic and predictable. Everything felt to me like it could use a bit more polish. The puzzles did get a bit repetitive, although I thought, especially in the first part, they were challenging without being frustrating. Once you got the hang of them, they became simple obstacles.

I thought it was a pleasant diversion for a few hours and might be something nice to do with a child.

Easy but buggy interesting short outing

This game was very short. And quite easy. Pretty much all the puzzles were of the pixel hunting variety, although occasionally you were required to put together relatively simple facts. It sometimes seemed to be trying to be educational. I didn’t like the inventory system and the tracking was occasionally off. The hints tended to be weak and unhelpful. But the biggest problem was in terms of bugs. I played on PC; I don’t know if these problems also exist on iOS. I didn’t run across any game-stopping bugs, but frequently the game would allow you to do things in a wrong order that screwed up later aspects. The biggest example was that I didn’t actually find the Mark III Risk Atlas, the second, improved Risk Atlas and the game kept going with everyone acting as if I had found the improved Risk Atlas. In a tracking bug, I was able to walk across a room without entering the room so the camera didn’t follow my character. Some cutscenes stopped playing or lines of dialogue got cut off without me pressing anything also.

The game did try for profundity and… I’m not sure it really achieved it. Could it achieve it in about 4 hours of playtime? The premise of the Risk Atlas and foreknowledge and time travel and its potential consequences were interesting… I definitely feel the game didn’t do enough to attach us to the characters for a PC adventure game. The ending was… I think unsatisfying for me. I think we should have been given more choices and more opportunity to consider potential consequences. Isn’t that what the game is all about?

Entertaining Monkey Island-clone

This was pretty obviously and explicitly and thinly disguised ripoff of Monkey Island, by some of the same staff. I thought this looked good, much better than A Vampyre Story - perhaps partly because I was able to play this properly? To get A Vampyre Story to run on a modern computer, I had to run it in safe-mode with the cutscenes as MPEGs and DirectX9 disabled. This game was patched by the developers to run. I found these puzzles to generally be more intuitive than A Vampyre Story, which I played immediately beforehand. There three very annoying sequences that, as far as I could tell, were guess-and-check with difficult to understand hints as to whether one was correct. The charades sequence mentioned in the review, the sword fight, and the final battle. The final battle consists of a… perhaps somewhat anti-climactic… stand on a platform moving around to reflect energy bolts back to the caster. There are about a dozen points to stand at, the bolts move randomly, and you have to hit three correct points.

The humor, as pointed out by the reviewer, probably more frequently missed the mark than hit the mark. There was some attempt to be feminist and culturally sensitive, although perhaps not enough… I thought the female did get better treatment than in The Curse of Monkey Island, as one of the primary characters, although there was plenty of misogynist talk from the male characters.

The story was generally satisfying, the characters were fun, the gameplay was good, the graphics nicely cartoony. A very solid effort.

Deeply disappointing...

I thought the soundtrack was nice. The graphics weren’t bad for the time, although they definitely look dated today. There were plenty of puzzles. They seemed somewhat un-intuitive to me. But the vast majority of the story was told in long cutscenes as opposed to being integrated into the gameplay. And then the game ended with a cliffhanger just when the story might get some intrigue.

Almost stopped playing this beautiful disaster

It was visually very nice. Some hauntingly beautiful graphics, although the animations weren’t great.

But even with their patches, the game was very buggy. I experienced the stairs bug at the beginning, where Ann would go back down the stairs on her own. The cursor wasn’t animated and changed instantly, but inconsistently. With the graphics, it was very difficult to see hotspots and sometimes hotspots would activate the cursor incorrectly or not at all. The puzzles generally consistent of clicking all the available hotspots until you found the correct order. More or less. There were rarely hints from characters of what to do and lack of persistence in dialogue could fail to trigger a required change while too much persistence could prematurely trigger it and screw up sequences. It wasn’t really too challenging, but the gameplay was awful. Every site was an “unintended” maze because it was a challenge to find hotspots to move from screen to screen, movement across screens was inconsistent, and there were lots of strangely configured, empty screens. The panther sequences were, if anything, more poorly conceived.

The story wasn’t awful. But it was really dark and dreary without any light at the end of the tunnel. And we really didn’t get a ton of detail for all the dialogue.

Extremely short, easy, but fun casual adventure.

Not a hidden object game… there are puzzles that are… a bit like traditional adventures. No real hidden object, although sometimes you have to find objects hidden in plain view. Everything is very simple and the traditional puzzles can be skipped. The music is quite nice and the artwork is cute. The story is a bit intriguing, although there’s not much depth to this game. I guess it is appropriate for all ages and a nice short, casual distraction.

Narrative adventure

There’s very little game play here. Puzzles are extremely simple and frequently don’t even have to be solved for the game to progress. The story was… decent. I was still a bit disappointed… but it was good enough. The review gets it right that the creators did a great job building believable dialogue. Other than that, there’s not all that much to this game. So… is it worthwhile? A vaguely interactive horror movie?

Good puzzles and retro feel... short and could have improved characters

The puzzles were well integrated and generally made good sense… although sometimes I found myself clicking a bit just trying to figure out what to do next. With that, I had about 4 hours for one playthrough. I played a second time to get complete Steam achievements.

The story… I found a bit depressing… I enjoyed the fantasy setting and I thought the final ending to the fantasy setting worked very well and was cute… and it does complement the actual ending well. I guess it felt a little flat because I didn’t really feel that involved in or connected to the characters. They were a bit two dimensional, especially in the real world… I think if they had more personality and we had more opportunity for idle chit-chat demonstrating unique, quirky personalities… that’s what this game needed.

It is a kinda nice tribute to Broken Sword… although the story is kept more simple and plausible. But the parallel stories and twists and turns keep it plenty exciting.

Not bad as an adventure game...

Yes… this game… seems primarily to exist as a delivery vehicle for social commentary that seems to frequently miss the mark and be generally somewhat incoherent. There is a lot of text that says little in many words.

However, as an adventure game, it is generally pretty good. The puzzles tend toward the relatively logical and well-integrated into the world… there are some conversation puzzles that take either esoteric knowledge, outside research, or guessing and checking… there is a quicktime battle, timing punches and guards similar to that found in Sam & Max, but more difficult. And there is a frequent problem with difficulty finding hotspots… and also, hotspots will sometimes do nothing and other times do something… a lot of hotspots have to be clicked twice before there is an appropriate interaction. Sometimes one hotspot won’t work until you hit a different hotspot. Several items can only be combined at a certain place and time. These rules at least are generally logical.

The artwork is quite nice and the images pretty and the concept of the boy that sees in black and white is interesting… but the gameplay tends to be relatively simple and straightforward once you get past the problems and the focus is on the conversations and story which is difficult to follow with a repugnant philosophy that isn’t even all that well supported by the demonstrations in the game.

It is available for free on Android, iTunes, or the publisher’s website.

Puzzle-Platformer with too much puzzle and too much platforming

My primary interest in gaming is story. And playing this… the story felt thin. I often felt like I didn’t know why I was going forward and didn’t feel invested in the world.

And so the repeated deaths in platforming elements, that sometimes had to be repeated in retracing steps, were annoying. And sometimes things that felt and looked like platforming challenges would turn out to be button presses. So is this game good for platform lovers?

Well… it has a few puzzles that require putting together pretty complicated, fiddly, and somewhat annoying bits of information. I don’t particularly like those puzzles in pure adventure games… I don’t think platform-players will want to be taking notes to solve puzzles.

So while it is beautiful and obviously crafted with love, I don’t feel like there is a good audience for this game.

A beautiful game... very nice story

The game was lovely and original and told a very nice story. I thought the puzzles were relatively well integrated if quite easy and… despite being totally linear, the game often made you feel like you had a choice. The world felt open.

I would have appreciated dialogue… I think it would have strengthened the connection with the characters and the relationship between the brothers. The brothers really only interacted on a couple of puzzles and… it would have been nice to see them… at play a bit.

But the ending is devastatingly sad and you get a lot despite the lack of dialogue.

Very short and linear, bad puzzle design.

The story of this game was very interesting… A future where robots rule and world and humanity has died out… but robots are… gaining some of foibles of humanity.

The graphics were nice enough… although… they lacked a bit of detail that I might expect from a 2016 game. It looks like it could be a decade old… they somehow reminded me of Portal. Not much lighting or shadow detail. They were beautiful and HD, but for some reason still left me unimpressed.

The controls were a bit clunky. Left-shift was for running, but that is never explained in the game and the walking speed is painfully slow. WASD is for navigation, but when you change rooms and change perspectives, the directions corresponding to the keys change… it’s a fixed 3D perspective. These controls are similar to those from Grim Fandango, just not a great implementation.

The puzzles… there are a few quick-time events… the most annoying to me was a circle you had to shoot red dots off of. This was a… code(?) to deactivate a machine. There was also a car chase, but it was relatively easy and forgiving. But none of the puzzles were particularly well-integrated into the world. They were almost all just artificial constructs to give the player a challenge or sense of involvement. One involves de-scrambling numbers to find a combination. Another involves recognizing musical notes.

Linearity… Some items can’t be clicked on or picked up until you need them. You can only converse with each individual once. You have up to four conversation choices, but if you pick one, you don’t get to hear the others so sometimes you miss bits of the story. Every area can’t be exited until you are done with that area and cannot be re-entered once it is exited. You never really have more than one choice of what to do or where to go.

Pretty... far too short

So… yes… this game is like Machinarium. But much shorter and more simple. Almost all the puzzles are just pixel hunts, because essentially all you need to do is hit the few hotspots in the right order. I got trapped in one level and had to restart because I did things in the wrong order and had to repeat a puzzle several times for the same reason. I call the puzzles “Just Right” because of that… for the most part, they were far too easy, but there were a few complications that made them annoying and I guess… too hard.

But after this experience and my experience with Machinarium, I probably will not buy Samorost 3, despite all the great demos.

I’m looking forward to the conclusion that… hopefully will be coming out, maybe this year. I thought this series was a well-developed adventure game… although… I do agree with the reviewer that Episode 2 had way too little story content and some of the puzzles were a bit illogical and sociopathic, especially in Episode 1. But as a whole, I thought the game came together very nicely.

Charming, cute very short, easy game

It was very cute and charming… but quite simple. Even going back and achieving 100% on everything took less than 3 hours with a lot of trial and error to find the final few pieces of information.

The game doesn’t really seem to be worth the price generally asked for it. I want to support the industry and it is nicely done… but it doesn’t quite seem to be directed at young children, but only seems able to provide a challenge for young children.

There was nothing really wrong with it… but it should have had more complexity or more story or something.

One of the greatest adventure games of all time...

This should be a 5 star review… but I’m deducting a star for the remaster. I don’t think it was really worthwhile. The graphics are subtly better. And I do appreciate having mouse controls - in my original playthrough… I don’t remember how long it took me to figure out how to run. But I love that… it took me over 8 hours of playing when I knew the game for the most part… It seems huge compared to most modern adventures. The puzzles are very well integrated in the world. The story and voice acting is superb.

I actually prefer the tank-mode controls to the camera-relative keyboard controls.

I do have to admit that, as others have said, there is frequently too little guidance for how to solve puzzles and all you can do is try everything a guess. Like… getting the metal detector from the litter box.

But there’s just so much to love about this game. An example of how adventure games should be made, even if the graphics look seriously dated.

It’s an interesting concept… hugs as a game mechanism, no dialogue, etc… but there is far too little story to make it worthwhile. And far too little direction about what to do which often leaves you wandering aimlessly.

The puzzles were generally mostly logical, once you figured out what was wanted from you. The problem was a lack of communication about goals and story driving the puzzles forward.

Maybe this would be an appropriate game to entertain a bored child on an iPod for a bit at a time… but there’s no plot, no content, no depth. I thought the puzzles tended to become repetitive and tedious within the hour time period. A few used clever mechanisms, but most were just a matter of waiting for your character to walk across the screen to get to the next button to click. The count-the-symbol puzzles were more annoying to me than anything.

And for some reason, despite being an incredibly simple game, it would take about a minute to load between levels.

Quite good, old adventure game with lousy ending

By the standards of modern adventure games, this is very tough. There are frequent deaths, tons of extra items, and sometimes you need items from other worlds for the one you’re in now (although generally you can only use locally acquired items). Generally, the puzzles are somewhat intuitive, but there are often tricky bits. Nevertheless, it is very much a classic, point-and-click adventure, story-driven and strong there too.

The only issue I have with this game is the ending. It is profoundly unsatisfying. Both the original ending and the silly ending for the American version don’t give much of a payoff. The original ending is marginally better, but depressing. But they don’t really fit a theme or give a lesson for the game.

I would have enjoyed another couple of hours of gameplay and exploration. I got just over 5 hours of gameplay. I thought the hint system was very nicely developed. The dialogue was decent. The graphics and sound were nicely immersive. The game (from GOG) crashed on me about 3 times during my playthrough. The story was nice, although I would have enjoyed a bit more of a payoff at the end. It really wasn’t that happy of an ending when you think about it… death, suffering, and religion are treated pretty lightly throughout. But a pretty good game still.

Sometimes tough, interesting story, still felt a bit short

Objectively, this game wasn’t short and had some very tough, non-intuitive puzzles. But they fit with the environment and it was beautiful and worked as a story. Sometimes the commentary got a bit repetitive, especially when you were moving back and forth looking for missing bits to solve puzzles. Every puzzle can be solved, although sometimes they are very tricky. But at the end I was left wanting… more meat. Definitely worth playing, but it lacked a bit of… cohesion that would make it feel like a complete game, I guess.

Much better, in my opinion, than similar exploration games like Dear Esther and Gone Home, but I think it could still have used additional scripting.

It’s an interesting idea, but annoyingly timed for the whole game - you have until the clock strikes 6 each day to process as many people as you can and really feels like a chore to play, because you have to find and identify flaws on papers, quickly. And the storyline… I’m not sure how rewarding it is. It would take days of playing to get all 20 endings and seems like it would be really a lot of miserable work.

Deeply flawed but clever, beautiful game

This game was beautiful, as all of Benoit Sokal’s games have been. The scenery was lovely everywhere, as was the tower. I thought the story was reasonably clever with plenty of red herrings. I didn’t think the evidence was particularly strong, but that is not totally relevant. The engine, the PPA with clue management rather than inventory puzzles was clever and well done, for the most part. Occasionally, it seemed a bit arbitrary choosing between multiple, more or less equivalent pieces of evidence. I got stuck a few times before realizing I had to go talk to another person about a conversation and then use that person’s statement on the first person. It seemed, frequently, like statements should get more reaction from all characters involved and that characters should remember and react to what they had been told. The detective was very free in sharing the information he gathered, but suspects would act and talk like they didn’t have information he had given to them, if it was given in the wrong order. I also had a bug, of sorts, with the Island starting to sink before I was told that the Island was starting to sink, and then several hours later, I encountered someone who gave me the news that was already obvious.

But really… the story was good, the scenery beautiful… it was a great concept of an adventure game and I think it was essentially a proof of concept and the engine felt a bit lacking in development and some of the characters flat and… maybe a bit of a beta version… lacking polish. Still a solid game and worth paying for.

Not a bad little adventure

I, as others, occasionally found the puzzles a bit too obtuse and item combinations occasionally random, but I think my biggest objections to the game were… well… I think it was rather short and I felt the ending was cheap. An overused twist ending that doesn’t really resolve anything. But the graphics were cute, the interactive sidekick was a cool concept and most of the puzzles were good, classic puzzles. A lot of people seem to really like the ending and the story, but I thought that was the weakest part. I was not at all bothered by the peculiar voice acting. I thought it fit the character. I just wanted another hour or two of gameplay with a different ending.

Beautiful huge world... great concept

I’m not sure how to feel about this. It’s not really a game. There’s no challenge. The plot is minimal and never totally clear or explained.

But it is impressive. The graphics are average for modern 3D adventure games, pretty, but somewhat blocky. But you have free movement over a large environment with lots of trails going every which way. I never had to backtrack on my first playthrough and I think it is set up to minimize backtracking. It feels like a real park that you can walk around freely. And not a dreamscape… the scale seems… realistic. Geography is believable. The pathing is amazing. And it is a lush world. A lot of parks I’ve been to have these trails that seem to go to nowhere, but they all circle back and connect with one another, ending at the same places. And my impression was the game does the same thing. It is very well executed.

However, it feels like a proof of concept. Like the whole game is just made to show the ability of the developers and their ability to build a world. An experiment in open, but linear gameplay. It doesn’t have any interactive elements. It doesn’t really make any attempt to involve you in the story. It’s very short and somewhat boring. It’s an impressive feat and I’d love to see how it gets applied to making a game. I’m sure this took a lot of work, but it seems like… demo of a mechanic. I hope the developers keep working on new games and make something with puzzles, better plot, more artwork, and perhaps character development.

Great addition to the Blackwell Bundle

I feel this was the first game of the series to get the difficulty just right and built a really great twist on the story. I can’t wait to play the conclusion. Also, the first game to feel long enough to be a full game on its own. Something like… twice as long as previous games playing once through. It felt much larger and more open. This game brought back the notebook from the first two games, accessed through a cell-phone, but again seemed to under-utilize it in a way which increased confusion. Also, I’m not sure how you were supposed to figure out that the business cards glowed in the dark. There were a couple of puzzles playing on an idea that wasn’t allowed in previous games and mostly isn’t used in this game. The achievements worked as sort of a hint system in this game instead of being used as bonuses, which I didn’t like… but really… I liked this game a lot and thought it was the most professional in the series.

Good continuation of the Blackwell series

I enjoyed this third game and understand the second one better in this context, but I still don’t think the second game should have been more than a free bonus or something. This game was still rather short, but made the graphics nicer, especially with the weather effects. The story was somewhat less tight than the other stories and this took out the notebook system in a way that made the game easier and more predictable. If you take out a puzzle system, it should be replaced by something. But I enjoyed visiting with Rosangela again.

Somewhat frustrating

Well… the biggest thing that makes this game hard, as mentioned in the review, is that the notebook system is broken. Needed clues aren’t added to the notebook and items rarely have to be combined in the notebook. So the system you learned in the last game doesn’t work in this game. Second, it wasn’t clear to me until most of the way through that we had shifted time periods. There was nothing to distinguish Lauren from her daughter other than her annoyingly repetitive chain-smoking. And the world mostly looked quite modern. And I don’t think this game really advanced the plot of the series - it was a flashback. And the opening puzzle was annoying too. You can switch characters now, but you’re left on your own as far as figuring that out. The story wasn’t horrible, although the ending didn’t fit well… but the game was unnecessary and probably should never have been released.

Cute little retro adventure

This game did have a lot of info dump, but I found it to be engaging and relatively unusual in how it structured its puzzles in a way that created new challenges with the notebook. Most of the puzzles were pretty self-explanatory once you understood the mechanics, but they made you feel more engaged with the story. I would’ve enjoyed the game more with somewhat more modern graphics and more length - a complete story, but it was quite good as part of a cheap bundle.

Very nice tribute to classic adventure gaming but cut off

A lovely game with great humor and dialogue and gameplay. A great tribute to games such as Escape from Monkey Island. It’s fun and well done… although I will admit that the beginning takes a bit too long to get through. But the real problem with it is that it ends just as it is getting good. This is Episode 1 of a 3 Episode game. It’s not that the games are really too short, but they are all part of one complete story that needs to be played together to be truly appreciated and they shouldn’t be sold or charged as three separate games, but should be sold as a season pass, like Broken Age, for example.

Gameplay - decently adventure-like. Storyline - lacking

The puzzles were generally quite easy, but interesting enough and the timing was quite achievable. It was an interesting and, I feel, successful blend of platformer and classic adventure game. Despite the platformer control system, it played like an old fashioned adventure game and I liked that. And the voice acting was good and the Cave made for a fun character.

But really, it was almost totally lacking in story. The cave narrates some things but I didn’t ever feel like I was discovering a story or exploring a world. There was a bit of a lesson forced on me with no real choice that I could find, but this felt like an experiment in a new form of gameplay with multiple characters and classical puzzle-solving in a platform-friendly environment. As a gameplay experiment, it worked but I don’t think it should be sold or marketed as a game on its own. The Cave is a great character and there’s so much potential, it is a shame the stories aren’t adequately developed in a natural fashion.

Annoying... bad story... not a worthy sequel

The puzzles often felt like they were just put in for the sake of being puzzles rather than as part of the story in the original. The story mixed in too much fantasy with reality to hold the attention. And sometimes it seemed like you were wandering around in circles trying to find the right conversation topic with the right person that would allow you to trigger the next conversation topic with no rationality. It wasn’t the worst game I have ever played, but seriously flawed and nothing near as good as the original.

A classic adventure gaming experience.

I finally played this for the first time recently and I plan to play more of the series shortly. It was smoothly designed to work well on modern computers and generally a good balance of puzzles, story, and exploration. There was one puzzle that required you to recall a series of numbers from a previous puzzle that was annoyingly long, but otherwise a very good adventure gaming experience.

Felt too small and linear

Given the reviews, I was expecting much more from this game. By the end, it felt more like a series of tasks I needed to complete to finish the game than fun. I found the story rather predictable and stereotypical and the world too small and annoyingly maze-like. The tapes were incredibly annoying and the voice-overs felt like cheating. The story should have been revealed purely by things discovered in the house, not voice-overs. And they seemed to have too much of the same items in each room and you couldn’t use them together or… I couldn’t find a game system to play the SNES games or anything to do with all the VHS tapes. I didn’t find it to feel like a real world or to be an engaging story.
