By now we all know the expression "be careful what you wish for; you just might get it." This axiom will prove oh-so-true in indie developer Dream Nyght Studio's upcoming The Wishing Stone, a visual novel-styled adventure currently raising funds on Kickstarter.
A girl named Ailsa is initially delighted to be granted three wishes from a "suspicious witch." The only catch is that the first must be made before midnight that evening. Or is it the only catch? After making what she believes to a "simple wish," Ailsa returns home to find that "there are inconsistencies in her memory and in the world around her." Worst of all is that her own house "doesn't seem to be the same and her family is nowhere to be found." Something has clearly gone very wrong with Ailsa's wish, and it'll be up to you to help her "complete her wishes and get her normality back." But beware your choices on her behalf, as "she might find the truth or she might sink into the darkness."
Combinining point-and-click adventuring with a visual novel-styled story about "family love and loss at a special time," The Wishing Stone promises plenty of hand-painted environments to explore, characters to interact with, inventory items to collect, and puzzles to solve. Along the way, you will also be called upon to make key decisions in how the story plays out, ultimately leading to one of at least seven different endings.
In order to complete the game for Windows and Mac, and perhaps mobile devices if stretch goals are met, Dream Nyght has launched a Kickstarter campaign to raise $5,000 USD by August 12th. If successful, we could see the full game released as early as September 2021. For a taste of what to expect right away, however, you can download the playable demo from either Steam or itch.io.
