The Medieval Psychologist to accept visitors in late 2022

Many adventure games involve solving problems for other others, but curing what ails people is the primary focus in ODD Game Studio's upcoming The Medieval Psychologist.

It's the Middle Ages, and players assume the role of stranger named Bernard, who arrives in Lostworth in order to help the local citizens mentally and emotionally. Bernard is "not a priest or a sorcerer ... just a researcher who knows a lot about the spiritual [nature] of man." Armed only with his "books, potions, spells and ... words," he will find plenty of work in this aptly named city "full of people lost in the darkness." But while "focusing on patients' personal stories and solving their problems," Bernard gets swept up in the secrets of Lostworth and the mystery of disappearing children, forcing him to face the truth about himself as well.

Presented in static first-person hand-drawn slides, The Medieval Psychologist involves three key elements. Houses accessed from the map screen will provide information about more than forty unique potential patients. Anyone Bernard accepts will visit his home, where he'll talk with them visual novel-style, listen intently to their troubles and attempt to find logical solutions. If dialogue alone isn't enough, Bernard can head upstairs to his workshop, where he is able to concoct different potions from ingredients gratefully given to him by recovered customers.

To successfully create a cure, Bernard will need to reference one of four different books filled with recipes. In order to read them, however, he'll need the requisite intelligence to understand them. This is where the game's RPG component factors in. The decisions you make and the quality of your previous treatments will impact a number of different stats, including Reputation, Charisma, Intelligence and Reliability. The higher your rating in each category, the more likely your chance of success with each new patient, whether by unlocking new dialogue options or granting access to new recipes. As your public esteem increases, "new and wealthier patients appear on the map" for you to meet. Failure is very possible, however, and your choices are important, as they "determine both the progress of the game and the fate of the characters."

There is already a release date planned for The Medieval Psychologist, though it's still more than a year way, as the game is due to be launched on Steam for Windows PC on December 1, 2022.
