Foolish Mortals shows first signs of life

Don't we all have enough foolish mortals in our lives? Heck no! At least, not the kind that indie developer Inklingwood Studios' upcoming "merry and macabre" point-and-click adventure is named after.

It's 1932, and Murphy McCallan is obsessed by the legend of hidden treasure inside Bellemore Manor on Devil's Rock, an island off the Louisiana coast, where an entire wedding party mysteriously disappeared on Halloween night more than three decades ago. Rumours abound that the house is haunted, but Murphy is undaunted and figures to ask any lingering souls themselves where the priceless riches can be found. He soon gets far more than bargained for, however, when he awakens "a household of spirits who don't mind that they're dead," along with an evil phantom determined to find the secret stash first. In order to set things right, Murphy must not only be the first to locate the loot, but in the process discover what happened on the island so many years earlier. Unfortunately, the young man believes that "in order to do that, [he'll] have to die too."

Presented in a lovely hand-painted art style, Devil's Rock has over 125 hi-res backgrounds to explore across 65 distinct locations. Scattered throughout will be more than 30 fully voiced "eccentric characters" (some living, some not) in a story filled with "ghosts, voodoo" and other supernatural fun, all accompanied by two hours of original music. The mechanics and gameplay promise to be pure point-and-click adventurey goodness, with over a hundred useable items and a variety of puzzles to solve, with a built-in hint system to help out if you ever get stuck along the way.

There is no firm target release date just yet, but Foolish Mortals is on track to launch on Steam for Windows PC sometime this year. In the meantime, you can learn more about the game from the official website and even keep tabs on its progress by registering for a newsletter.
