Inon Zur to Conduct the Los Angeles Jewish Symphony in a Video Game Music Concert

Emmy award winner and 3-time BAFTA nominated composer Inon Zur is internationally renowned for his emotionally dynamic original music scores for film, television, and video game franchises. Zur's iconic themes and avant-garde scores for the Fallout series have been described as "sophisticated and atmospheric" (Classic FM) and received two BAFTA nominations. His top-selling soundtrack for Fallout 4 is celebrated as one of the best original video game scores by BAFTA, The Game Awards, and Classic FM.

Join Inon Zur on Sunday, November 20th, 2022 at 7 pm for an unforgettable evening of music from some of the most popular video games of all time, performed by the Los Angeles Jewish Symphony. This concert will feature the US premieres of Inon Zur’s ‘Starfield Suite’ and ‘The Elder Scrolls: Blades Theme’, as well as the world premiere performance of ‘Suite from Syberia: The World Before’ featuring GRAMMY and EMMY award-winning pianist Emily Bear. Tickets are available now at www.thesoraya.org.

Inon is currently scoring Starfield - the first new universe in over 25 years from Bethesda Game Studios, the award-winning creators of The Elder Scrolls and Fallout series. Classically trained with a flair for powerful, melodic orchestral writing, Inon conducts and records world-class orchestras, and his music is also performed in symphonic concerts. He has produced and collaborated with artists, including Florence + The Machine (Dragon Age 2), and his debut major label album, Into The Storm, was selected among Classical KUSC's best albums of 2019.

Most recently, Inon composed the classical score for Benoît Sokal's Syberia: The World Before, released on DECCA Records, and premiered his Starfield Suite with the London Symphony Orchestra. We had a chance to speak with Inon Zur shortly on this upcoming concert that will feature the fantastic music of Syberia: The World Before.

You have an upcoming concert with the LA Jewish Symphony - can you tell us a little about what to expect from the night?

This special one-off concert will be presenting a long time repertoire of games that I composed throughout the years featuring the most prominent pieces from the most famous games, including the Dragon Age series, Fallout series, The Elder Scrolls: Blades, Starfield, and of course Syberia The World Before. We’ve worked very hard to put together a program that gamers should be familiar with, especially long-time gamers, and with the music as well.

We’re so happy that we can share with gamers this unique selection, and we really hope everybody is going to enjoy the evening.

The concert will feature a number of your well-known video game scores - what was it about composing for games that first drew you in?

I was first introduced to composing for video games in 1996. At that time I did not know about the field. But soon I discovered that one of the unique aspects of composing for video games is its form of free composition. Unlike with film and television, you are not locked to a picture, which allows you to compose a whole piece of music and in many ways follow the old traditions of classical music. As a classically-trained composer this appealed to me tremendously as I felt that I could best express myself in this way, writing music freely without being bound to any production limitations.

You'll be performing the Fallout Medley Suite on piano at the concert - can you give us a little taste of what that will entail?

The Fallout suite features music selections from most of the Fallout scores I composed (excluding Fallout Tactics). It includes music from Fallout 3, Fallout: New Vegas, Fallout 4 and the main theme for Fallout 76, so it contains a selection from each game. We will first hear the main theme for Fallout 3 and then a combat piece, followed by the main theme for Fallout: New Vegas as well as a combat piece and exploration piece. Then we will hear the Fallout 4 main theme, that I will be performing myself on piano accompanied by the Los Angeles Jewish Symphony. Last but not least, the medley concludes with the main theme for Fallout 76.

The concert will also feature the World Premiere performance of the Suite from Syberia: The World Before - can you tell us a little about the piece and what inspired it?

I took the music from Syberia: The World Before and treated it in the most classical way. It’s essentially written as a 35-minute symphony with four movements. Each movement represents a time in the protagonist’s life and what she’s going through. The first movement introduces us to Dana Rose’s theme as a young and promising pianist. The second movement describes her life in the city. The third movement portrays the tragic events with the looming war, the love and loss in her life. The fourth movement is dedicated to the game’s other lead protagonist, Kate Walker, so it’s more from her perspective in the world.

This one-of-a-kind program will also feature music from the video game series' Dragon Age, The Elder Scrolls: Blades, and the highly anticipated Starfield - what can fans of those games expect to hear on the night?

From The Elder Scrolls: Blades, we’re playing the main theme which will be a US premiere. From Dragon Age we will play the main theme from Dragon Age 2, the very well known song from Dragon Age: Origins, ‘I Am The One’, and the song ‘Destiny of Love’ which I composed for Dragon Age 2 with the famous Israeli artist Idan Raichel. We’re very excited to feature the talented singer Jillian Aversa as a soloist performing alongside the Los Angeles Jewish Symphony. This will also be the US premiere of my ‘Starfield Suite’ that features exploration music, combat music, and closes with the main theme for Starfield.

What was it like working with Emily Bear on this project?

Emily was a fantastic collaborator and performing artist on Syberia: The World Before. She is a rising star in Hollywood and the entertainment world at large. Her musicality and amazing talent impresses everyone who experiences her performances. Her piano playing has such an evocative flair and creativity, it complements my music so well, she’s really breathing new emotion into my music. I’m so happy and honored to have her in the show.

Thanks for taking the time to talk to us on the upcoming concert!
