The first episode of N1NE: The Splintered Mind unveiled

The cyberpunk genre often provides a uniquely dystopian glimpse into humanity’s future. Next to continue this tradition is indie Australian developer OD1N Studios’ upcoming N1NE: The Splintered Mind, a planned trilogy set in a world “torn between monopolistic conglomerates and ruthless gangs.”

It’s 2099 and players assume the role of a “resourceful detective” named Avery Nine, whose latest case becomes a very personal one when his friend is found dead. Now you must “explore, interact, investigate and interrogate your way to the bottom of your friend’s mysterious murder.” The case will take Avery through “the real world of Neo Eysden as well as Nu.Real,” a virtual-reality-like environment where many people go to escape their grim offline lives. This pursuit will lead him into contact with the city’s “seedy underground, resistance movements, and the nefarious corporations” in a quest that ultimately goes “deeper than he ever imagined.” Fortunately, even amidst all the darkness and despair he encounters, “hope can always be found in those who are willing to stand and fight.”

While no further details have been revealed at this time, a brief example of what awaits us can be seen in the recently released teaser trailer, showcasing the slick first-person presentation and VR-based gameplay. Success will depend, both in the real and virtual worlds, on “exploring, manipulating objects, scanning items to discover more clues, hacking security and computer systems, conversing with various characters in the world, solving puzzles, and more.” Along the way, the action will be accompanied by an original soundtrack from Felix Watson, known for his work on The Invisible Hand and Henry Mosse and the Wormhole Conspiracy.

No definitive release date for N1NE: The Splintered Mind – Part 1 has been announced, but the Steam page claims it is “coming soon” to Valve Index, HTC Vive, Oculus Rift and Windows Mixed Reality headsets.
