Demo lets you brush up A Painter’s Tale: Curon, 1950

We must learn the lessons of history lest we be doomed to repeat it. This seems to be one of the underlying themes of Monkeys Tales Studio’s upcoming A Painter’s Tale: Curon, 1950, an adventure game about love, resistance, and the lessons lying literally just below the surface of a past that refuses to be forgotten.

Curon Venosta is an idyllic village in beautiful South Tyrol in the Austrian Alps, nestled along the crystal-clear waters of peaceful Lake Reschen. Everything seems peaceful and pristine, but the lone bell tower still jutting above the waters in the center of the lake serves as a reminder of the original village of Curon, still lying submerged after being flooded against its citizens’ wishes by the building of a dam in 1950.

This real-world location and its history are woven together with a fictional story to create the setting for A Painter’s Tale, in which a visiting artist is dragged into the lake by a mysterious woman. Finding himself somehow transported into the past, he must now investigate what happened here and learn about the events that led up to the flooding by uncovering the memories of the villagers who were ultimately forced to abandon their homes and flee their land.

Presented in a voxel graphic style but dedicated to historical authenticity, A Painter’s Tale is based on a scale model of the village from the Alta Val Venosta Museum that has been digitally constructed. Information sheets about the town history, as well as the customs of the region, act as collectibles as players participate in mini games and choice-driven dialog with the villagers.

A Painter’s Tale is slated for release on Windows and Mac this December, so we don’t have long to wait before fully immersing ourselves in its historical tale. For those who want a sneak peek a little earlier, a demo of the game is currently available to download on Steam.
