You just can't escape Groundhog Day. Not really. Bill Murray may have managed it back in 1993, but the time-looping curse of Punxsutawney is ready to strike again in next month's VR exclusive Groundhog Day: Like Father Like Son.
The events of the movie, of course, saw the thoroughly selfish Phil Connors get stuck in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania one February and forced to relive the same day over and over until finally learning that what needed to change was him. The apple doesn't fall far from the tree, obviously, as now his son, the "charming but arrogant and social media-obsessed" Phil Connors Jr., finds himself back in his hometown and caught in the same time trap as his father once was, albeit one day earlier. Now it's his turn to "learn valuable lessons about life, love, and family," all in the course of one very special (and oft-repeated day).
Created exclusively for virtual reality, Like Father Like Son is a first-person adventure presented in a somewhat cartoony 3D art style. Players will need to "solve puzzles and explore the world introduced by the film as they try to break out of this time loop." Along the way, you'll discover "beloved places and personalities from the film as well as new characters" to interact with.
Developed by Tequila Works (RiME, The Sexy Brutale), and co-produced by Sony Pictures Virtual Reality, and MWM Immersive, Groundhog Day: Like Father Like Son is nearly upon us, with a target release date of September 17th for Oculus Rift, HTC Vive and PlayStation VR. For a limited time, pre-orders in North America will include a digital copy of the original movie.
