Returner 77 comes back around on Steam

Solving puzzles may not seem like the most logical mission for the last remaining operative called upon to save the human race, but that's exactly what players will be doing as the titular hero of Returner 77, a former mobile-exclusive sci-fi puzzler that has just been ported to Windows and Mac.

Yes, the planet is in need of saving once again. Or rather rebuilding after an interplanetary war has all but wiped out mankind. In a last-ditch effort to salvage the human species, "8000 sleepers were sent into space with 77 Returner agents tasked to call them back when the time was right." You are the 77th and final Returner, but when you awaken, you find yourself docked to an alien spaceship "with no memory of what happened or how you got there." Your only guidance comes in the form of video messages from your immediate predecessor. It is your job to "follow the mysterious messages left behind by Colonel Ling, Returner 76, to find out if [you] can still complete [your] mission."

If that sounds like the setup for an epic 3D adventure in outer space, you're entirely right, though perhaps not quite in the manner you might expect. Described by indie Danish studio Fantastic, yes as a "3D cinematic puzzler", Returner 77 confronts players with a variety of intellectual challenges to overcome within the "beautiful crystalline environment of an alien spaceship." Which makes sense, of course, as when everything from language to technology is literally alien to you, it's all one big puzzle comprised of many smaller ones. But hey, only the fate of Earth rests of your success, so no pressure.

Originally launched on iOS and Android devices late last year, Returner 77 is back, bigger and better than ever, and available on Windows and Mac for download on Steam.
