Darkness Within 2 marks the publishing tip of Iceberg Interactive

Not all adventure news is coming out of E3 this week, as Iceberg Interactive announced today that it has signed the publishing rights to the horror adventure Darkness Within 2: The Dark Lineage for Europe.

The sequel to 2007's Lovecraft-inspired Darkness Within: In Pursuit of Loath Nolder picks up after the events of the first game, with mentally unstable police detective Howard E. Loreid escaping the asylum to pursue the reasons behind his nightmarish afflictions. To do that, he'll need to visit a seemingly sleepy little town called Arkhamend, and players will also explore a variety of other locations like a Victorian mansion, snow-covered woods, and hidden underground buildings and tunnels. Unlike its node-based, point-and-click predecessor, however, this will all be done in free-roaming 3D with direct control navigation.

The name Iceberg Interactive may not ring any bells, but the new company was founded by Lighthouse Interactive veterans when the latter was forced to declare bankruptcy recently, so the team is no stranger to the industry, or the adventure genre in particular. The publishing deal for Darkness Within 2 includes all of Europe (including Russia), with the exception of Turkey, Spain, and Italy.

While publishing news is always good news for gamers, the downside is that we'll have to wait a little longer for the game itself, as the projected release date has been pushed back to early 2010. In the meantime, stay tuned for a first-hand look at the game by Adventure Gamers, coming soon.
