The Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John Watson we've come to know and love are distinguished middle-aged gentlemen with years of experience under their belts. But how did such an impressive legacy begin? Next year we'll get a glimpse of part of that answer, as Frogwares today unveiled a prequel adventure in their long-running series, called Sherlock Holmes: Chapter One. 

Dreams, whether they be blissful or nightmarish, are uniquely yours. Aren't they? Not in the land of Oniria Crimes, where humanity has built the world's first dream city. Of course, the optimistically named Palace of Desires is far from perfect: wherever people go, power, politics and crime are rarely far behind. Mixing visual novel-style storytelling with point-and-click mechanics in a distinctive Minecraft-esque voxel world, the upcoming adventure by Spanish developer cKolmos is a classic noir mystery with a twist.

Thank goodness advanced civilizations leave no instruction manuals behind when they become extinct. Otherwise, where would be the fun in figuring out how everything works? The latest game to embrace this familiar formula is KOStudios' Illusive Gate, a Myst-style adventure currently seeking funding through Kickstarter.

While Jack the Ripper still gets the most attention among famous unsolved murders, the Zodiac isn't far behind. The latest attempt to determine the identity of the never-caught serial killer in California in the late '60s and early '70s is Punch Punk Games' upcoming stealth thriller, This is the Zodiac Speaking. 

Most adventure games ask you to be sly like a fox, but in Infuse Studio's Spirit of the North you'll have to be a real fox in order to awaken a legendary animal spirit inspired by Nordic folklore.

All adventure games require using one's head to overcome obstacles, but that notion takes on a whole new literal meaning in Helheim Hassle, indie developer Perfectly Paranormal's colourful side-scrolling "body desecrating puzzle-platformer" coming soon to PC and consoles. 

Adventure games come in all shapes and sizes, and some adventure games are made up of all shapes and sizes.  A promising example of the latter is Graceful Decay's Maquette, a first-person "recursive puzzle game" coming soon to PC. 

It's been a decade since Frictional Games first caused us to stock up on clean underwear for Amnesia: The Dark Descent, and seven since The Chinese Room took up the mantle in A Machine for Pigs. But just when you thought it was safe to come out again at night, now Frictional is back with the announcement of Amnesia: Rebirth due out later this year. 

The thought of going back to school may not be a very enticing prospect in real life, but it's much more appealing when there are puzzles galore waiting if you do, as there will be in indie Croatian developer Pine Studio's upcoming The Academy.

The machines may not have taken over the world just yet, but they do take center stage in Sergey Noskov's sci-fi puzzler 7th Sector, which is coming soon to consoles after its PC launch last year.

Eclipses are relatively rare, but if you wait long enough one is sure to come back around. Fortunately, this is also true of White Elk's Eclipse: Edge of Light, a former VR mobile exclusive that has just arrived on PC and consoles. 

No one writes letters anymore; it's all about video. So perhaps it's no surprise that Kadokawa Games' newly-revealed sequel to Root Letter will be Root Film. 

Video games are often escapist fantasy, but there's no escaping mental illness and more and more games are beginning to explore how the two can positively intersect to raise awareness. One such effort is the newly-released Fractured Minds, a 2017 BAFTA award-winning "interactive short" by teenaged indie developer Emily Mitchell.

The phrase "perception is reality" isn't really meant to be taken literally, except in the case of SUPERLIMINAL, the upcoming first-person environmental puzzler by Pillow Castle Games.
