Claustrophobics have an intense fear of being stuck on elevators, but indie developer Fezziwig Games has made that prospect even more (enjoyably) disturbing for everyone with its debut mobile release, Escape the Hellevator!.

Many correlations can be drawn between the mediums of film and interactive entertainment, with works of one genre often influencing those of the other. Now, independent developer Dale Penlington is drawing inspiration from some of filmmaking’s elite directors for a new series of games. The first of these, entitled The Silence, draws right from the top of the pile, aiming to emulate the trademark feel of the Master of Suspense himself, Alfred Hitchcock.

Victorian England. A vicious killer is on the loose, and only one man can hope to stop him... No, this isn't Sherlock Holmes squaring off against Jack the Ripper once again, it's Bertram Fiddle in pursuit of Geoff the Murderer in an upcoming point-and-tap mobile adventure trilogy.

Adventure Gamers have good luck with island secrets to date, and indie developer Somgame Studio is hoping to continue that trend with The Secret of the Mayan Island, currently in development for release later this year.

There's another acclaimed videogame designer making a return this year, though the name won't be as instantly familiar to adventure game fans as his recent predecessors. Paul Cuisset, the French creator of Flashback, is joining forces with Microïds to develop the sci-fi puzzler Subject 13.

A promise of torment and sorrow may not sound like a good time, but context is everything, as evidenced by OhNoo Studio's upcoming point-and-click-adventure, Tormentum: Dark Sorrow, currently raising funds through Indiegogo.

Calling Clown's Secret a throwback might conjure up visions of low-res pixel art and a chiptune soundtrack, but the upcoming debut point-and-click adventure from indie developer Expression Studios goes much farther back than that. We're not talking 1990s retro here, or even 1980s; think 1920s, the heyday of black-and-white cinema and silent films, and of Charlie Chaplin in particular.

The world's worst-spelling hero is back to save the uniwerse... I mean, the universe once again, as Cateia Games and Steve Ince have announced a partnership to create Kaptain Brawe 2: A Space Travesty. But the Kaptain will need a spaceship and some crowdfunding in order to get the sci-fi comic sequel off the ground.

If ever there was a real-world setting just begging for its own adventure game, it's Canada's Oak Island, home to the famed "Money Pit" and its centuries-old legend of hidden treasure protected by deadly traps. Filling that void (figuratively speaking) is Visionaire Studio's upcoming The Mystery of Oak Island, currently seeking treasure of a more tangible kind on Kickstarter.

What happens when you combine a ball, a kid and a time machine? So asks the upcoming title Inspire Me from Argentinian indie developer Blyts, due to hit Kickstarter later this month. (The answer, as it turns out, is nothing good for the time continuum, but lots of good for gamers.)

With its grand tales and colorful characters, such as trickster god Loki and hammer-wielding Thor, Norse mythology has sparked imaginations for centuries. Countless books, movies and video games have been influenced by the myths, and upcoming first-person point-and-click adventure The Frostrune looks to make its own Norse-inspired mark on gamers, transporting them to the frozen, mysterious world of Nordic folklore.

Danish animator-turned-indie-developer Alina Constantin has a world she wants gamers to explore, but needs a Kickstart(er) to make the first chapter come alive.

Developer Sunlight Games is bringing to light a remake of one of Sierra On-Line’s lesser-known titles, Gold Rush!. For those unfamiliar, Gold Rush! was originally released back in 1988, towards the end of Sierra’s own metaphorical gold rush of games based on their AGI engine (think King’s Quest I – III).

It’s been said that the more things change, the more they stay the same. Each new age and civilization, no matter the amount of technological progress available to them, seems to suffer from the same set of challenges. That cycle certainly holds true for the inhabitants of Wax Lyrical Games’ upcoming cyberpunk dramedy, Mega Bad Code, in which advanced technology, classism, and crime set the stage for a futuristic, darkly funny murder mystery.

Ferris Bueller may have desperately wanted a day off almost 30 years ago, but iOS and Android owners may also soon find themselves looking for one to play the parody Ferris Mueller's Day Off when it releases later this month.
