How Fenton Paddock once saved Shambhala from Nazis

Lost Horizon was a pleasant surprise. Yes, the protagonist and the whole story are blatant Indiana Jones rip-offs, and the game actually acknowledges it, not to mention some outrageous puzzle solutions reminiscent of the Tunguska games. And yet it has such a class - I almost forgot how much effort European developers put into those 2.5D adventure games back then. We don’t truly appreciate what we have until it’s gone.

Six chapters with plenty of locations to explore (Hong Kong, Tibet, Morocco, India, Nazi Olympics and a castle in Germany), surrounded by multiple movie and ag cliches/references that make up for a fairly long and exciting adventure. Not to mention art and animation that still hold very well: the devs felt no need to come up with excuses like “this is our vision and you will get used to rubber faces and abstract art”, all backgrounds are beautiful, some are even magnificent, same goes for cutscenes - and there are plenty of those, the hero is a clumsy badass who gets into all sort of trouble.

And while the gameplay is often hit and miss, with puzzles being both on easy and crazy side, it actually gets better with every chapter. The last two were my favourite, the one where we play as two characters stuck in different time periods in particular, similar to Day of the Tentacle. The game also successfully avoids timed/death sequences despite it often feels like there’s one on its way, even the last fighting scene (with some awesome choreography) feels like a parody of quick time events: you just choose your tactics and watch your character (the third protagonist) fight, always with different results. And then you could replay it in a “Bonus” menu.

Speaking of which, it also has another awesome addition that opens after you finish the game: a prototype game they developed 2 years earlier to attract producers. It plays like an additional chapter, or a short prequel, a game within a game! Wish more devs would’ve done that… Anyway, it might not be among the best adventures, but it’s definitely one of the more enjoyable games from the 2000s. Looking forward to the sequel!

Pleasant adventure

This is a competent adventure game without any actual flaws but with some space for improvement. The playing experience is actually pleasant, even for an inexperienced player as the puzzles are quite easy most of the time and, on the good side, most often make sense.

The story has a large traveling adventure thread and is reminiscent of the adventures of Indiana Jones in the way that it takes place before the Second World War and involves stopping the German Nazis form obtaining some super weapons. While well constructed, the story lacks some larger ambition that would make it deeper and more memorable. It serves it’s purpose while playing the game without providing anything beyond that. Just think of it as watching an Indiana Jones movie. The story is interesting, moves from one place in the world to another, has some plot twists but it’s all has been seen before. And there is nothing that would move the audience or incline them to really think about any aspects presented in the game.

The graphics are made in the old 2D style and look very well, possibly a bit simple, but simplicity is often better that unwarranted complexity. The music is good in the way that it’s unnoticeable and doesn’t hinder the gaming experience. At the same time it’s nothing memorable either.

Generally this game has a little of a casual type feel or a feel of a game for a beginner if you like. Combination of the easy and competent puzzles and the interesting but somewhat shallow story create that impression.

For those who like: action focused story, Indiana Jones movies
Not for those who like: deep story, challenging puzzles

Story: 3/5
Puzzles/mechanics: 3/5
Setting/climate: 4/5
Aesthetics: 4/5

PS. As a side note, some people have said that they think that a score of 3.5 is too low for this game while according to some, this game deserves a lower rating. How each person rates this game is a matter of opinion but I would like to point out that 3.5 is not a low score. According to this site’s scoring system it actually corresponds to 7 on a 10 grade scale. I would say it means it’s a good game but not very good or excellent. Read the score according to the grading scale.

Tedious

This game is the most boring adventure game I have ever attempted to play (and I have played many). It’s like watching a badly scripted, ham acted, long winded play which occasionally allows you to solve a well signposted puzzle. In between the puzzles the script is too too long. It comes nowhere near the quality of the Myst series or Aura type adventures. Needless to say I did not attempt to continue with it. Even the much cheaper adventure game ‘Drawn:The Painted Tower’ has more atmosphere and maintains interest better than this.
I will admit the visuals are generally good
