My favorites are mostly uplifting or comedic in nature (the list is ordered from my most favorite to least):

Stacking (Not your typical adventure game and innovates in many ways)
The Whispered World (One of the best modern-day “classic style” adventure games imo)
A Vampyre Story (Lots of funny moments - albeit some is dark humor - there’s a lot of “spunk” that you can feel attributed to every character)
Sam & Max (Lives up to its legendary name)
Tales of Monkey Island (Lives up to its legendary name)
Deponia(1 and 2… haven’t played 3 yet… The game is hilarious and has great puzzles)
Book of Unwritten Tales (1 and 2… EPIC adventure - very fantastical and sprinkled with comedy)
Jack Keane (1 and 2… Not sure why all the ratings are so bad, it’s funny and quirky and puzzles aren’t bad)
Remakes of The Secret of Monkey Island 1 and 2 (Lives up to its legendary name)
Machinarium (Very unique and innovates in many ways)

I really wish Telltale (made Hector, Sam & Max, Tales of Monkey Island) would continue making the puzzly type adventure games then going in to their totally story driven games, especially ones with so much gore and violence Frown

Not in any particular order.

The Walking Dead
Broken Sword 5 (I thought the first part was great)
Deponia
Book of Unwritten Tales
The Raven (Though I’ve only gone through the first episode)

I’m not even sure if this was all in the last 5 years, but meh…

In no particular order,

The Whispered World
Telltales’ Sam & Max series
Broken Sword: The Serpent’s Curse
The Night of the Rabbit
To the Moon

Recently completed: Game of Thrones (decent), Tales from the borderlands (great!), Life is Strange (great!), Stasis (good), Annas Quest (great!); Broken Age (poor)

Primorida - great universe, excellent puzzles. Many people prefer Resonance and Gemini Rue to it, but I didn’t find them particularly interesting.
Machinarium - very atmospheric little gem.
Stacking - a truly amazing concept, very stylish and entertaining.
Broken Sword 5 Part 1 - easily one of the most enjoyable adventures in recent years.
Amnesia - a masterful horror and a great achievement for an indie.
The Lost Crown - another wonderful horror adventure.

1. Gray Matter. It really gave me a feeling of the old classic adventure games, without feeling like nostalgia only.
2. Tales of Monkey Island - especially episode 3-5
3. The Ace Attourney series.
4. Sam&Max;: The Devils’ Playhouse
5. Machinarium
6. Stacking
7. Gemini Rue

Haven’t played Broken Sword 5, Primordia or Resonance yet.

Let’s see…

The Whispered World sort of refired my love for AG’s after I hadn’t seen anything interesting on the front for quite some time, so I think I’ll grant it first place. After that, in no particular order, I’ve immensly enjoyed:

Resonance
Broken Sword 5 Episode 1
The Book of Unwritten Tales
Ghost Pirates of Vooju Island
A Vampire Story
Gemini Rue
Blackwell series
Lost Horizon
Machinarium
Yesterday
Almost everything from Daedalic

And probably much more that I’m forgetting at the moment.

Can you guess the one thing most of these games (Wadjet Eye games excluded) has in common? Grin

Duckman: Can you believe it? Five hundred bucks for a parking ticket?
Cornfed Pig: You parked in a handicapped zone.
Duckman: Who cares? Nobody parks there anyway, except for the people who are supposed to park there and, hell, I can outrun them anytime.

I just realized, I sure do like games with depressing subject matters.  Phoenix Wright, you are my one beacon of sunshine!

(Disregarding all those horrible murders that you investigate ...)

The last 5 years I feel that there have been many very average games and very few that reach classic status. Off the top of my head:

Classics: Gray Matter, Machinarium, and Walking Dead
Close but not quite: Book of Unwritten Tales

I still have quite a backlog of recent adventures to catch up on though.

Currently Playing: Face Noir, Tex Murphy Pandora Directive(replay), Heavy Rain, Mass Effect 3 (Replay), Broken Age
Recently finished: Walking Dead S2E1 (4/5), Tex Murphy Overseer (Replay, 4.5/5), LSL Reloaded (2.5/5), Broken Sword 1 (Replay, 4/5)
Playing Next: Journey, Moebius

I’m not entirely sure how many of these actually qualify for the past 5 years, but these are the “best” adventure game titles I’ve played during that time which I enjoyed.

Night of the Rabbit - A little easy, but thoroughly enjoyable, sorta regret I didn’t save that one for Christmas. Loved the atmosphere of the game, and being a sucker for good music that really won me over.

The Book of Unwritten Tales + The Critter Chronicles - Played these last Christmas, great atmosphere and interesting enough puzzles. Had a tendency to crash on my mac though, which was a little annoying…

The Walking Dead - If you can call it an adventure game it’s one of the best for a long time.

Lost Horizon - After years of despising the mechanical nature of German adventure games and their logic this one brought me back into the fold, and prompted me to try a few other titles (such as Deponia). It had its issues, but it quirky, fun and had the feel of these old Indiana Jones adventure games I played non-stop as a kid; might just have suited me perfectly. Since it sort of brought me back to my favorite genre I probably value it a little higher than it’s actual worth.

Deponia series - Just an entertaining series. It did get a little repetitive with some fairly silly mechanics and plot-twists after a while, but it was a good old fashioned (not in difficulty though) silly game.

Gray Matter - Just a good game.

I think these are the games that I would recommend mostly anyone to try, with Night of the Rabbit IMO being perfect for the Christmas/Holiday Season. Not that it’s Christmasy, it’s just a very cosy game. Plus the rabbit’s voice acting is close to perfect.
