What will I move on to? I’m not sure - I should fit in something shorter before Night in the Woods or Torment, I think.

Have you played Inside?

I haven’t yet - you’d recommend it? I have been reminded that I have Uurnog, the new Nifflas game from the last Humble Monthly, installed and ready to go. I think a musical platformer about saving animals could be just the change of pace I need!

IIRC you are the guy who replayed Thief series quite alot
You will dig Inside
it has elements of sound design and cutscene from Thief
Smile

Most Anticipated Tier1: MiyazakinextARPG,ReFantasy,DeathStranding,Cyberpunk,RDR2
Tier2: Shenmue3,FF7R,Sotc Remake
Tier3: NoMoreHeroesTSA,Borderlands3,Darksiders3,BioMutant

Sounds promising! And indeed I just looked at the store page:
“Hunted and alone, a boy finds himself drawn into the center of a dark project.”

Yeah, I see what they did there Smile
OK, wishlisted!

What nomad said, very recommended and it’s a short game - around 2h

last finished game was contradiction I liked it. the game was charming had an interesting premise but the ending completely fell off a cliff, still the ride is fun enough especially if you get it on sale on steam.

Just finished Hector - Badge Of Carnage.
It was ok(ish) - the plot was fun if silly but the humour quickly paled into repetitive cliché as did the characters. Worth the effort to play but doubtful if I ever would replay it.

The last few games I played weren’t adventure games, but the last adventure game I played was Year Walk (2013). For some reason I could never get it to work before, but I’m trying to play a game from every letter in the alphabet this year and tried again since I needed a Y and it worked fine. Computers can be so finicky sometimes…

Anyway, I thought it was a good game and here’s a shot from it:

I enjoy playing adventure games on handheld systems- PS VITA, Nintendo DS and ipad mini.

I forgot about that. Guess I figured that playing a game as part of a playthrough didn’t count. My most recently finished (non-casual) game is also Kathy Rain.

My last finished game was the latest Carol Reed game Profound Red. I really enjoyed it although I didn’t think it was quite as good as Shades of Black.

Ha, this is surprising. I am on the very same quest! I found it to be a helpful way to tame my backlog and figure out what I’d most like to play next.

Going by the obscure games thread, you are probably having a much harder time finding games for each letter. Or maybe your completionist instincts come to the fore and you care less about quality.  Wink Do you have any suggestions for X? I was thinking I will try to get The X-Files Game to run but it might dislike my Win7 setup.

And, to bring things back on topic, I also just took care of my Y and started and finished Yesterday yesterday (as it happens). I quite like Pendulo games even though I find the puzzles harder than most people seem to—there is something they do differently with puzzle clues that doesn’t quite make my brain juices flow. Dunno what really. Beautiful graphics, great VO, interesting story structure. I can’t wait to sink my teeth into the pre/sequel. (No screenshot cause I already uninstalled it and I am not in the habit of taking screens while playing Meh)

It has Quicktime issues, made only worse by a 64 bit operating system.

I just finished Red Comrades Save the Galaxy. I can’t fully recommend it, as the English translation is pretty bad. Interesting game otherwise.

I recently finished Quern: Undying Thoughts. Great game with fantastic puzzle design—and a story that’s surprisingly interesting. Highly recommended if you like Myst-style games.

Currently playing: Return to Mysterious Island 2 (R) | Baldur’s Gate II EE
Recently finished: Lost Lands: The Four Horsemen (4/5) | The Emerald Maiden: Symphony of Dreams (3.5/5) | The Pillars of the Earth, bk 1 (3.5/5) | Atlantis I (1.5/5) | Ticket to Earth, ep. 1-2 (4/5) | Angelica Weaver: Catch Me When You Can (3/5) | The Longest Journey (R) (3/5) | Baldur’s Gate EE (3/5)

Thanks, Dale. That’s a pity. It seems this will require some mucking around with Virtual PC.

My abecedarian goal isn’t limited to adventure games so X isn’t really that hard. There are lots of RPGs, action games, strategy games and other things to play. There really isn’t all that much that is an adventure game in the truest sense, and fewer yet that are actually any good. The X-Files Game is the best one.

There’s The X-Files: The Deserter (2004) (J2ME), a game made for cellphones which can also be played in an emulator if need be. It’s made by some of the same people who made The Moment of Silence. It plays like an early 90s adventure game; first person and inventory puzzles with a verb bar. It’s a short, simple game. Here are a couple screenshots:

Another is an old text adventure called Xenos (1982) (TRS-80). I have a copy but I’ve never played it. I don’t know if it’s good, but considering its age it probably doesn’t hold up well.

After that you need to look to games that push the boundaries of what an adventure is; games like Xiama (2000) (Windows), which is just a puzzle game or Xplora1: Peter Gabriel’s Secret World (1993) (Windows), which is more of a multimedia experience with some minor adventure elements. Only for Peter Gabriel fans IMO. I didn’t care much for it.

Then there’s The X-Fools: The Spoof Is Out There (1997) (Windows) made by the same people who made Pyst. It’s not really an adventure game, but it’s very casual and funny if you are a fan of the show.

There’s also a HOG published by Big Fish called XIII: Lost Identity (2011) (Windows), based on the Belgian comic book series (the only reason I know about it). I haven’t played this one either.

I’m not really into VNs myself, but there are a bunch of X games in that sub-genre as well, though not all are in English. They tend to be X games in the pornographic sense also.

X is a pretty grim letter for adventure(ish) games, so good luck if you’re committed to that. Of course, if you are only doing this for one year it’s pretty easy. Start doing it every year and it gets more challenging…

I only have 4 letters left (O, Q, T, Z) in my personal quest for this year. I’m also trying to play at least one game from every year between 1976 and the present (only 7 years left) to celebrate every year I’ve been playing video games.
