Adventure Gamers Challenge! #11: ROM - Read Only Memories
I hope there is interest in this one. It’s a different kind of adventure.
ROM is a cyberpunk mystery adventure, it looks like a Snatcher tribute. So mostly written text with choices and puzzles. The reviews are good with a emphasis on the story and characters.
Game is available in the usual digital stores.
I’m going to put deadline for this challenge in 1 week. So until March 5th.
“It’s like a Telltale game, Phoenix Wright, and Snatcher had some sort of millennial cyberpunk baby.” - The Escapist
What?
Downloaded the game from GOG.
I have only a vague idea what I’m letting myself in for.

What?
i dont get the telltale part, but the resemblances to snatcher and PW are fair.
It leans in the direction of visual novel with some light exploration and problem solving. The story drags a bit in places but its good overall. My favorite thing about the game might be the music.
Ok, I’m at chapter 3 and the my plant died. It’s honestly surprisingly good and I’m enjoying it quite a bit.
At one point got a message “This action will have consequences” which was a fun reference to Telltale/Life is strange.
Puzzle wise it’s simple but it seems that there’s more than one solution for some puzzles which is something I really like. Story wise, it’s engaging (I was planning to only play a chapter and then play the new King Quest chapter but I couldn’t stop playing )
Played the beginning part, really feels like Snatcher. Lovely music.
The voice of the narrator felt to familiar and good, went to see and it’s the actor that Lee from Walking Dead!
Just started it. Not bad so far, and I like that it highlights hotspots - no pixel hunting.
Just started it too. It’s more retro than I expected, gameplay included. I’ll reserve judgment till later.

I’m on chapter 2, so far so good, game seems to be all about the polically correct. do we play a AFGNCAAP?
do we play a AFGNCAAP?
We get a name and gender of our choice quite early, but so far in the game it is Turing who is more of the main character than we are.
I didn’t want to answer his question about the name, kept cancelling so in the end he called me USER_NAME

Are you genderless too?
Ah, the arcade machine in the Stardust club - Mega Phobetor plays exactly like the action sequences in Snatcher, nice touch
If there’s one criticism I have (and there aren’t many so far), it’s that it’s a little bit… chatty. And as there are no puzzles to break it up, it can get tiresome at times.
I’m terribly behind in this one and won’t be able to finish it in the deadline. Anyone close?
It’s quite long, isn’t it? I finished today, but only because I wasn’t playing anything else.
I liked it - it was a lot better than I had expected. Perhaps a little bit too retro for my tastes - if published in the 80s I’m sure it would have been regarded as a masterpiece.
Nice one, Oscar
It is indeed bigger than I thought it would be, I’ll still finish it later. I have to say these kind of text heavy games I would prefer to play it on a portable console.
