I wanted to try out how GK3 would look like with high resolution textures. Here’s the result of my little test, which you can experience yourself by going in Gabe’s bathroom in the hotel.

Installation is simple: unpack the folder in your GK3 folder. The gk3.ini file goes to the root folder where the game exe is located. Start the game and go directly to the bathroom to behold the new textures.

Get the file here: https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B2FLduwn4c1WaUJ3a2g2ZDktOUk
It’s been scanned, so it should be clean.

Here’s a comparision shots:

I’m curious to see the screenshots. I wonder how much of a difference it’ll make. I’ve always thought textures were the least important part of 3D graphics, far far far below the engine and models (both of which would be much hard to change, obviously).

In all honesty higher res textures do very little here, as GK3 engine lacks the advanced texture shaders which would allow the use of normal maps, bumps, detail maps etc.

Textures in general are very imporant, it’s just that the engine needs to be able to handle different types of textures othen than just color maps. Not everything in modern gamnes is real geometry, a lot of the nice details are done with advanced shaders and textures.

Playing adventure games is ‘something’, creating adventure games is something else, but playing adventure games and being able to manipulate them is just ‘great’.

I’m replaying GK3 right now (for about the 7th or 8th time…) and started playing it in a higher resolution than the 1024x768 max the game itself offers. Looked a bit better but it messed up the Sidney sections, because of it being in 2d I believe. If anyone can find a solution for that it would be really nice!

As for the textures and stuff I must say I love GK3 just as it is. The quirky character models and old-school 3D graphics are part of my nostalgic love for the game. Will try this out though.
