Jack the Ripper (1995) by Gametek is a strange and complicated DOS game. You must find the famous killer before a certain date by drawing conclusions from premises you’re supposed to identify in the text and tag in your notebook. Premises as in a) All gamers are human; b) Karlok is a gamer;—> Karlok is human. The very idea is weird and the execution makes it utterly confusing. Where do I go, what do I do, lots of red herrings. Traveling, interrogating people, searching for clues, everything you do takes time and time is your enemy. You are rewarded for finding clues but it is possible to end the game with a negative score.
Of course I didn’t succeed and when my time was up (literally, because you get killed by The Ripper) I didn’t try again. On the positive side: The atmosphere is quite good and the gruesome murders are described in detail.
I always wondered what this game was like as some of the screenshots look interesting!
