Homemade Text Adventure

Hello all,

A few years ago I started coding a text adventure in my free time, which eventually became somewhat of a game engine. I’ve only had a few friends play through it, but I thought I might as well post it somewhere and see what others had to say about it. This is the only place I could think of where a text adventure might be appreciated Smile. Even though I’m old enough for it, I’ve never actually played through any traditional text adventures; So I built everything from the ground up with what made sense to me.

If anyone is interested the website is listed below, which includes the source code. The game is programmed in Java and runs in the console. Let me know if you have any thoughts or comments.

Although the days of commercial text adventures are over, the non-commercial IF community is alive and kicking. Lots of excellent new games, yearly competitions, reviews, the works.

and many other sites.

I’ll also add that Inform, a text adventure authoring language written by IF author Graham Nelson can be a huge help.

I’m impressed (very) that you wrote your own code, but I can’t recommend Inform enough for folks who are interested in writing their own interactive fictions: http://inform7.com/

Great project - I had never heard of it. You have to not mind pulling all of your hair out to create it from scratch Smile.

Inform is as far as I’ve ever gotten to coding anyhing myself. As karlok mentioned, the IF community may not be big, but it’s thriving, and compelling.

I also realize that Karlok didn’t include this link: http://ifdb.tads.org/

You can create your own account and include links to your own game - it also allows others to review it.
