CAMDROME. LONG LIVE THE NEW MEAT.
I have some potentially promising news for fans of horror FMV games like Phantasmagoria and Ripper.
During the Penny Arcade Expo this week, an old CRT PC monitor with a webcam drenched in blood appeared at a random booth running some irregular code in command prompt followed by video clips of what appeared to be people being assaulted and murdered on camera.
As an article from Awesome Robo further elaborates:
The exhibitors who were lucky enough to be stationed by the CamDrome PC state to have never seen anyone setup the station nor update it, yet somehow throughout the weekend more video clips began to appear on the computer’s screen. Even more horrifying is the computer’s sudden disappearance at the end of the Expo after the Megabooth exhibitors turned their backs for a group photo.

Here’s some footage of the PC from the day:
There’s also a website for CamDrome up at (If you want a good scare, view the source code to the website.): http://www.camdrome.com
And a Twitter feed at https://twitter.com/CamDrome
Now, it leads to the question: what the hell does all of this mean? Well, some SEGA forums have have lit up after some noticed the references in the DOS code to Sega CD games like Night Trap and Double Switch (which you can observe in the YouTube clip I’ve posted). This is leading people to believe that this is a teaser for a good old fashioned FMV horror game.
There are also numerous mentions of ‘meat’ suggesting that Team Meat (from Super Meat Boy and The Binding of Isaac fame) may be involved in this little stunt.
And then there’s this comment that I just saw posted that spells it out but is hardly verified at this point of time:
I know one of the actors in this video. He’s the second guy and his name is Zac Amico. If I’m correct in what he told me it’s supposed to be a throwback to games like Phantasmagoria and Night Trap. I believe he said that one of the Team Meat guys, I think Edmund McMillen, is involved in it.

So, is it something that adventure gamers have to look foward to? Especially to those with fond memories of orange sweaters and pendulum blades? It’ll be something to keep a tab on throughout the following months.
That would be amazing, but I can’t see Team Meat working on an FMV game. Given the emphasis on precise control and randomisation in their last games, it’d be a complete 180 to work with such a ‘scripted’ medium. I will be very happy if it’s more than just a fun publicity stunt though.
