Kurufinwe’s Top-10 Endings
#2 – The Walking Dead
“And Clem… Keep that hair short.”
I’m not going to sing the praises of Telltale’s The Walking Dead here, as I feel I’ve already done so quite a bit in the past. I’ve said how much the game managed to make me care about Clem, which is quite a feat. I also said long ago how much I wanted a game about moral choices, which is something The Walking Dead executed superbly.
Just a few words about the ending, then. First, I was extremely impressed with how much the choices allowed me to make Lee my character. The decisions may not have had a huge impact on a world gone to hell (nor should they, that’s the whole point of the story), but they definitely allowed me to shape the character and his relationships with everyone else. This greatly increased the game’s emotional power.
And then there’s that line in the screenshot. That Lee’s final words to Clem (or at least my Lee’s final words) were a callback to one of their few truly happy moments together was probably the biggest punch in the gut any game has ever delivered to me. It hurt more than I could say, and made sure that I will never forger this ending.
