Leisure Suit Larry *2* Reloaded by this Christmas/early 2014? And Larry 8!

Yep, Larry 2 Reloaded has been confirmed by Al Lowe himself. When Al gets back to work, he really gets to work!

And it looks like we should expect the all-new Larry 8 sometime after that. Larry 2 Reloaded is going to be a serious overhaul and like a totally new game, I’d imagine.

http://www.digitaltrends.com/gaming/funny-man-al-lowe-on-leisure-suit-larry-reloaded-and-leisure-suit-larry-8/?redirect_override=true

Excerpt from the above article:

Digital Trends caught up with Al Lowe during his European vacation to talk about Reloaded and what’s next for the series. Turns out that work on Leisure Suit Larry: Reloaded 2 is already underway.

“We’re busting our butts to get this one out the door,” Lowe told us, “But we’ve begun working on Larry 2 also. I would hope it will be by Christmas, but I suspect it will be 2014.”

Replay Games president Paul Trowe told Digital Trends earlier this spring that there was some contention as to what game to make after work finished on Reloaded. It was down to either an HD remake of Leisure Suit Larry 2, or the long lost sequel Leisure Suit Larry 8. It appears that Lowe got his way with the immediate sequel in the works, but that doesn’t mean the adventure game maker has forgotten about continuing the series. “Our fans deserve to see how Larry’s life plays out!” said Lowe, saying Leisure Suit Larry 8 is “absolutely” still in the works.

Very good, welcome news. We are going to have so many amazing adventure games coming out in the next year.

Paul told me some time back that the plan was to do one game a year, as that’s the reasonable commercial shelf life of most games now. Put the game out in the spring, put it on sale around the holidays, and repeat.

I hope they don’t wait too long on Larry 8. The moment seems right now. They could maybe get away with remaking 3 as well, but after that I think you’ll see the excitement level start to wane.

You know, I’m excited about this.  I always loved the fun Spy Movie pastiche that LSL2 had going for it - and having the opportunity to go in and fix the problems with the game?  It’s a win-win situation.

I very much hope that Josh Mandel is involved. His new writing material that was previewed in the Larry 1 Reloaded alpha is excellent (and there is more new stuff on top of that, supposedly) and added so much to the game. His writing can elevate any game, even already great ones.

LSL has always been one of my all-time favorite series, and seeing the series come back to life like this is such a dream come true.

Josh is the creative director at Replay now, so I’d think it’s safe to say he’ll be involved.  I think his input on LSL2 should be great.

That is Awesome !!!!!!!!
i always thought that LSL2 is the only special/different part from all THE OTHER LSLs parts you can see larry being kinda Serious or lets say act like an adult sometimes .... he even becomes a hero at the end,

the thing that really taking my mind after i heard this info/Update that this one must Not be like the expected Larry1 (reloaded) remake with (you know) the same places and characters…  etc .. it will need a complete makeover ,the basic story can already offer (suspense and thrilling moments and not just larry hunting some Chicks) that!.. so it would look like a total different LSL2; a real remake not just a duplicated/enhanced LSL2 .

I wouldn’t jump the gun on Larry 8. Earlier this month in our own interview, Al said:

We currently have the rights to remake all the current games. If these sell well, we hope to obtain the rights to do new titles, to do a game that would extend the franchise.

So they may very well be “working” on 8 already, but whether it ever gets made isn’t entirely up to them.

I’d say remaking the first trilogy and then trying to get Larry 8 off the ground would be ideal. While 5 could do with a remake, neither 6 nor especially 7 needs one, and it would probably just confuse people that a 4th game isn’t available and they’re instead releasing Larry 5 reloaded. So going forward with a new game after 3 would be what I’d do anyway, even though it’d be tempting to try and milk the franchise as much as possible right away.

From this vantage point it looks like Josh and Al and Paul and every single person who pledged to their Kickstarter want to see Replay make 8 but Codemasters are holding them back.

I’ve been the one pushing for Larry 8 within the company, mostly because from a creative standpoint, it’s much more interesting to work on something new than to rework a game that’s already been done before. Even when I put my old fanboy hat on, I come to the same conclusion, because I’d rather play something entirely new than play a remake.

But I *believe* both Al and Paul would prefer to go sequentially through the series. We certainly don’t want to confuse players. Al did that by jumping from Larry 3 to Larry 5, and I’m guessing he’s had quite enough of THAT.

As far as I know, our agreement with Codemasters would allow us to go either way at this point.

Cool to hear you weigh in Josh.  I really do think that re-imagining Leisure Suit Larry 2 could really be a fun task - there’s a lot to work with and change up within the parameters of that game.  I really think you’d have a fun time with it - I’m just looking forward to whatever you all end up doing.

I think many people, like me, would prefer to see more of the older games modernized and introduced to a whole new audience first. This isn’t just about what I personally would want, but rather is about expanding the Larry fan base and allowing more people to experience the games. The Larry legacy can be handed down to more people this way. Many younger gamers are never going to bother with pixelated graphics or fiddling with DOS box. For the younger set, such games might as well be nonexistent. In a sense, game or book or movie series only stay alive insofar as new people and new generations are continuing to discover and experience them.

Why support the rush to do Larry 8? We will get there.  I would prefer to see them build up a foundation with other Larry games (that can actually run easily on modern devices!) first and establish the story and character for new players.

Count this proud Larry fan and backer squarely in the Paul+Al camp of wanting some more Reloaded games first.

Besides, it sounds like Larry 2 Reloaded will almost be like a totally new game.

I totally agree with Advie on that one. My favourite LSL game is number 2, it feels a litte bit more “mature” than the other games in the series.

Also I would be very keen on seeing a remake of LSL2, that is less “cartoonie”. Make it a little bit more of mature graphics, not the style from LSL1 Reloaded.

Not a chance. The fact is, the harmless cartoony version of Larry is more popular. He went from a fairly realistic character, sad but lovable because he we could relate to him, to a total loser we laughed at who made us glad we weren’t as pathetic. LSL1, 2 and 3 weren’t far off real life, the games were a lot like what you’ll find out there in the seedy underworld as well as the world of dating, sex and marriage. LSL7 not so much.

I agree with you, I want to see more of the mature, serious Larry. It sounds ridiculous but I actually think Al Lowe had something important to say and the early games were very much art the way they gave us an unflinching glimpse of the modern male sexual experience. They are far from “porn games” like people see them now.

i never really got to play larry 2 or 3 fully so im excited for those more than the first one.  not only are these remakes great for newer generations that never played adventure games, but also for adventure gamers who missed out.  there are alot of old games i never got to play and trying to get back into primitive ega graphics with a parser interface is rough even for adventure game veterans. for example i started trying to play gold rush earlier this year but i just couldnt get into it because of the graphics. (that would be another remake id love to see!)  i hope eventually every single adventure gets upgraded to beautiful high res so i can enjoy them all Grin
