Okay, I get it. You’re happy because your favorite game has just been through a successful playthrough. That doesn’t mean the forum is the best it has been. You only have to look at the kind of threads we had before compared with now to know that’s not true, by any measure.

I have not seen a thread that was anything other than “here’s a new game - discuss” in ages. Actual discussion topics like these are completely gone:
https://adventuregamers.com/forums/viewthread/425/
https://adventuregamers.com/forums/viewthread/7560/
https://adventuregamers.com/forums/viewthread/4923/
https://adventuregamers.com/forums/viewthread/4645/
https://adventuregamers.com/forums/viewthread/4842/
https://adventuregamers.com/forums/viewthread/5008/
https://adventuregamers.com/forums/viewthread/8549
https://adventuregamers.com/forums/viewthread/5181/
https://adventuregamers.com/forums/viewthread/648/

Well, I’m still here despite all the playthroughs my favorite games have lost. And yes I’m happy that this is the first game in about five years that a game I nominated received sufficient support to merit a playthrough. So what? How do any of the threads you list have anything to do with the complaints you stated? Where is the thread where you told us how you were going to revive the AGSOTD thread? Where is the thread that tells us how you are going to help Lady K develop quizzes? Of all the threads you listed, I didn’t see you as the OP. So what’s it going to be?

Agustín Cordes’ and CaliMonk’s post are an excellent example of why we do need a good old fashioned forum. I think it would be difficult to have that kind of detailed and thoughtful exchange at Discord.

I don’t care if JA has a forum. I just don’t want to see it go belly up. It’s nice to have two solid adventure game resources.

I was never particularly interested in quizzes, playthroughs or scenes of the day, but I know others enjoyed them and they are a signifier of forum activity and health.

What I am interested in is game discussions (and actually I was OP of one I posted), something you seem unwilling to talk about. Probably because it challenges your argument about the forums being better than ever.

As a recent user of Discord my initial thoughts were that I really enjoy the forum format here and it would be difficult to migrate it to a chat room setting but having just joined Augustín’s server, I am thoroughly impressed with the scope of it and look forward to AG’s experiment!

Once we do have a discord server, I’d like to clarify it is by no means a replacement of the forum or the focus we’d put there. It’s simply a different medium that our community could chat in, one in which we’d see if there would be different audiences and discussions going on.

I still believe for certain long form discussions and all, a forum is a much better fit. I’m also not oblivious to the state a lot of forums are in either though :-)

One thing that is missing from this discussion is forum identity. Each gaming forum evolves to it’s own purpose and use depending on how it is run and the membership. No one way is better than another. Here there is a lot of open and lively discussion, but it can also get mean spirited. Most of the games featured here that don’t appeal to me at all, but the few adventures that do are well covered .  GB is much more in line with what my tastes are, and is a very friendly environment for posting. However, there are very strict rules about what can and cannot be said. At JA, perhaps the games took a back seat, but I know friendships were made there that last to this day.
Personally, no one forum has ever served as the perfect spot, so I’m glad that I still have some choice.

Ah yes, your post made me realise I’d phrased it badly.  I didn’t mean to suggest a complete migration to a different platform.

You may even drive traffic through Discord back to the forums as there’s plenty of users to be had on the couple of adventure gaming servers I’ve visited.

Ah, yes. I do remember the “lack of recognition for text adventures” thread.

Where did that thread go? What have you done recently to revive it? Do you think Text Adventures deserve a sub-section of Adventures all its own? Or maybe a front-page masthead title all its own.

I wouldn’t be opposed to any of those options. Make it happen! You make it sound as if my thinking that the current forum structure is better than ever…(but certainly not as good as it could be)...is the reason your thread didn’t get the traction you wished for. Sorry about that, but the two are unrelated.

1. You need more than one person to “revive” a forum.
2. This thread isn’t about me.
3. I’m not interested in finding someone to blame here. You can make a new thread if you want to do that.

Maybe these kinds of juvenile pissing contests that have nothing to do with the thread topic are the reason for the lack of substantive discussions at AG. Instant death to an interesting conversation!

I do agree that there seems to be clear baggage between certain members and the earliest opportunity to make a ‘sneer’ to someone else is utilized immediately, packaged in a response to the thread. Not sure what that ever achieves, beyond similar responses, but maybe that’s the point..

Either way, I have a Discord server running here. Will share wider at one point, but let’s see if there’s some interest from this thread/channel and go from there.

Now back OT, I do like that there’s finally activity on JA again and that they are trying a new design (the old one had some serious challenges, mostly for mobile). My challenge with JA as a ‘user’ was always that it seemed to be more important to promote the store then the actual content of the platform, even if the store was often broken and severely hindering the loading of the website. If anything I think you get _less_ users to your store like that, instead of promoting it as a quality addition. You can’t force that unto users, especially not in a market that’s quite full you need to have solid quality and reputation.

Either way, interested to see it evolve.

AG on Discord - This will be a very interesting experiment. I posted the invite on the adventure gaming channel that I belong to. Agustin should be encouraged to post the invite on his channel, too, as it is very active.

The store on JA has always been problematical except for years ago when it was Oberon, at least for me. Digital Downloads is not being promoted on the JA front page now so maybe your concerns about it have been noticed by others.

I’m really excited about this. I’m not much of a forum person anymore and I’ve seen so many gaming communities move to Slack or Discord over the last two years so it will be fun to interact with other adventure game fans through Discord. It’s just more convenient to check on my phone vs using a forum. I don’t think forums are ever going away completely but discord channels are fun too.
