AG Theme of the Week 22 - What’s on the Menu?
What’s on the Menu?
The screen you will probably see the most in any adventure game is the menu screen.
Sometimes it’s quite plain and boring,
Adventure at the Chateau d’Or
and sometimes it’s decorative and lively.
Fran Bow
Sometimes it’s complex but the graphics don’t reveal much about the story,
The Cassandra Galleries
and sometimes it’s simple but effective.
Spycraft: The Great Game
My favorites are the ones that reflect the mood of the game, such as
Dracula Resurrection
Kathy Rain
and Myst IV: Revelation.
Feel free to add your favorites or maybe some that disappointed you.

I like the theme Lady Kestrel! I’ve come cross on occasion Menu Screens with a difference but still racking my brains as to what games they featured in!
Hey, that’s a neat theme!! I like to try all options and read sub-menus each time when I first enter a game, before actually clicking on a “New game” option. One of the most interesting menus that stuck in my memory is the one in Phantasmagoria, not only because of a music that sets the mood, but because it’s one of the rare examples where you can actually choose to play any Chapter in the game, whether you entered the game for the first time or not:
p.s. (you did fool me, I was certain this is going to be about food in games )
Recently finished: Four Last Things 4/5, Edna & Harvey: The Breakout 5/5, Chains of Satinav 3,95/5, A Vampyre Story 88, Sam Peters 3/5, Broken Sword 1 4,5/5, Broken Sword 2 4,3/5, Broken Sword 3 85, Broken Sword 5 81, Gray Matter 4/5\nCurrently playing: Broken Sword 4, Keepsake (Let\‘s Play), Callahan\‘s Crosstime Saloon (post-Community Playthrough)\nLooking forward to: A Playwright’s Tale
p.s. (you did fool me, I was certain this is going to be about food in games )
Maybe next time!

i will take the usual Maître , please, whisky no ice.
Cool theme Lady K! I just recently finished this awesome game. I think the menu system is very well done as it fits flawlessly into the game by using the main character Marks’ laptop, tablet, and cell phone.
This message will self destruct in 3… 2… 1… BOOM!!!
Ooh, nice. INFRA just moved higher up my wishlist.
The menu for Shardlight sets the tone and introduces the game world rather beautifully:
Even though it’s pretty sparse i love Machinariums start menu and how the game just starts on the same screen when you start a new game.
I make stuff:

My favorite would have to be Johnathan Winterbottom: Adventures of an Ordinary Person
Member of the NAALCB - (North American Anti- Lobster Cop Brigade) since 2019.
It doesn’t matter to me how basic a menu is (as long as the game is worth playing!) but having said that my favourites include those that integrate into the game environment. I haven’t played Infra but Shardlight to me is a perfect example along with:
Many of the casual games I’ve played have very elaborate menus, and some have interactive animations.

Yes, possibly those menus sprung to mind to start with!

i’ d nominate it for the best menu page at all games
Sometimes the menu if accompanied by music can reflect the tense atmosphere of a game.
Wolf Among Us is very stylish, specially with the music
Not an adventure of course but the Brutal Legend menu is one of the best

The three games in the Drawn trilogy fit the interactive menu description.

they toll for thee.
