Best Current Way To Program Text Adventures?

A friend of mine installed an old-school text adventure game on the computers at the school where he works, and one of the teachers has started using the game in class as a critical thinking exercise for students.  He was wondering if there were any modern, Mac-friendly tools suitable for programming games of this nature with more curriculum-specific content?

Since I’m all for introducing a new generation of gamers to games where they get to use their brain more than their trigger finger, I thought I’d ask here to see if anyone has any suggestions.

Thanks in advance for your replies. Smile

Warning- People won’t have as much of a sense of humor about you putting an Alka Seltzer in your mouth then staggering into a restaurant while shouting “THE VIRUS HAS MUTATED!” as you’d hope they would.

Consider this: People say “Ewwww!!!” when they hear about a guy having a hairy bum or hairy back, yet every Teddy Bear ever made has had both a hairy bum AND a hairy back and nobody complains about them; In fact, people think Teddy Bears are adorable.

Inform seems to be the easiest and user-friendly (though I still haven’t sat down and made one myself!)
