Tex Murphy: The Pandora Directive

Welcome to San Francisco of the future - a strange megapolis with a post-apocalyptic feel, where ordinary humans co-exist with mutants - the result of radioactivity. In this city is also the office of Tex Murphy, a lonely private investigator, kind-hearted, yet bitterly ironic. A series of murders occur, and before long Tex finds himself involved in a complex conspiracy of political intrigues and shocking scientific discoveries. It is a sequel to Under A Killing Moon, utilizing the same 3D engine, real actors, and gameplay system. You’ll have to talk to many people about various topics, and also to solve some complex puzzles. The game introduces a new gameplay element: Tex has three kinds of answers at his disposal during some important dialogues. Depending on what kind of approach you choose for Tex, you’ll come to one of the 6 different endings.

Sam & Max Hit The Road

This classic adventure is one of the best loved games from LucasArts. You play Sam (a Canine Shamus) and Max (a hyperkinetic rabbity thing), the freelance police. Travel all over the US on the trail of a sasquatch named Bruno kidnapped from his place at the Hall of Oddities, and on the way visit locations like The World’s Largest Ball of Twine, The World of Fish, and The Mount Rushmore Dinosaur Tarpit. The puzzles involve some of the most twisted humor in a LucasArts adventure game, and the dialogue goes way over the top. They encounter strange locations, entirely unhelpful clues and a cast of suspicious (possibly dim) characters, that complicate their mission. It features an cycling verb point-and-click interface, that is, where the player right-clicks to select a different action icon, rather than picking from a list of verbs at the bottom of the screen.

Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective

Sissel is an amnesiac ghost who must use his ghostly powers to protect the lives of innocent people while attempting to uncover the secrets behind his own untimely demise. He has the unique ability to possess and manipulate objects within the world. Using these abilities to his advantage, he returns to a point four minutes before a character’s death to change their fate. Capcom’s unique supernatural puzzler possesses all the right elements for a lively DS adventure. Ghost Trick’s innovative control system, complex plot, and compelling gameplay combine to make this an enjoyably spirited adventure.

Dreamfall: The Longest Journey

6 years after The Longest Journey comes the sequel Dreamfall. The premise is that the Earth we know is actually only half the story of the universe. Our scientific Earth’s true name is Stark, and its reality is mirrored in another dimension by a magical Arcadia. The game concerns a young woman named April Ryan who lives on Stark in the 23rd century. When a disaster throws the balance between the scientific and magical Earths out of whack, it’s up to April to step in and restore equilibrium between the two universes. Core to the story are three playable characters: Zoë Castillo a twenty-year old young woman who lives with her grandfather; Kian an assassin who will begin to question his beliefs and returning from TLJ, April Ryan who will discover that no matter how hard you try, you cannot escape the past. In what can best be described as a modernized version of point-and-click, characters will have an innovative ‘focus field’ that allows you to interact with and scan the environment.

Amber: Journeys Beyond

This tight and self-contained ghost story begins when you visit a fellow scientist named Roxy. An avid paranormal researcher, Roxy has chosen her new home because she believes it is haunted, she plans to use it as a laboratory proving the existence of psychic phenomena. Driving out to the house in a thunderstorm, you are run off the road by a shimmering apparition and are sent crashing into a lake and you find Roxy in the garage, apparently dead. It’s up to you to save yourself and the overzealous scientist from the forces lurking in the house. Patience and close attention to detail are musts for playing. Critical items are sometimes hard to spot, and one or two of the scenes take place in very dark locales. When you can see, graphics are crisp and drawn with a faint gothic sensibility, surrounding the player in a milieu of creepy sounds and ghost-catching gadgets. Each story is told through a different graphic style that instantly conveys the mood related to its particular ghost, from the faded photographs that make up the memory of a woman who died during World War II to the strangely distorted perceptions of a gardener obsessed by UFOs, or the watery images that form a child’s sad reminiscences of a distant, snowy winter. The game is spooky and engaging, a worthy electronic heir to campfire stories everywhere. Although it was the only game the developer made, it set the early standard for the many indie horror developers today.

The Dig

A group of scientists discovers an asteroid that is on its way to a collision with the Earth. Is there any way to prevent the disaster? Boston Low, a NASA veteran, is sent to command a space expedition on the asteroid. Accompanied by the journalist Maggie Robbins and the archaeologist Brink, Boston investigates the asteroid and finds a strange structure that undoubtedly belongs to an alien civilization. During the course of investigations, the team finds itself on a seemingly deserted planet. To their surprise they discover that it is hollow, and that there is evidence of alien technology inside. They try to figure out what it is for… when suddenly it is transformed into a crystal-like spacecraft and they find themselves hurtling through space at warp speed, across the galaxy to the planet of origin. It is a point-and-click adventure game with a simple one-cursor interface and more complex puzzles than usually encountered in LucasArts’ adventures. Despite having a serious story, the game follows in many ways the tradition of LucasArts’ humorous adventures. It’s also based on a story of Steven Spielberg and was highly anticipated before its release.

Overclocked: A History of Violence

From the makers of Moment Of Silence, this is an extraordinary story revolving around psychiatrist David McNamara and five traumatized young patients. The five young men and women are found barely clothed, the apparent victim of a traumatic act of violence, in the rain-drenched streets of New York City. McNamara is called to help as an expert psychiatrist. At the Staten Island Forensic Hospital he is tasked with treating the young patients – who all suffer from severe amnesia. Dave begins to carefully probe their memory, trying to reveal their obscured past. The innovative story-telling approach of Overclocked sees the player take on the role of the patients as they are questioned, playing and exploring their memories one by one. In reverse chronology, the player makes his way through the shards of their past and experiences frightening events that seem incoherent at first. The insights gained can then used back in the role of Dave McNamara to piece together the interconnections between the victims and open up new lines of questioning.

Dagger Of Amon Ra: Laura Bow 2

This second and final game in the Laura Bow series, is set in a museum in the 1920s and reflects the Egyptology craze of the period. You play as Laura Bow (one of the first female protagonists in a game), a Southern belle who has just graduated from Tulane University and moved to New York City, where she has landed a job at a prestigious newspaper. For her first assignment, she is asked to write a straightforward, lightweight story on a benefit held at a local museum to celebrate their new Egyptian exhibit. When a murder occurs during the party, however, she is locked inside with all of the other suspects. As other guests begin dying one by one, Laura must solve the numerous crimes occurring before the culprits escape or kill her. The Laura Bow games were distinctive in that they required some actual logistical detective work on the part of the player; for the most part, though, the puzzles were of the typical variety of inventory and environment interaction (and frequent, often unexpected, death) found in most Sierra games. The player is asked a series of questions, ostensibly by the police, to prove that Laura had solved the crimes and discovered the secrets of the other suspects.

Cognition: An Erica Reed Thriller

This new episodic game features Erica Reed, an FBI agent with the super natural ability of post-cognition. Basically, she touches stuff and can see how events went down. Cognition is 4 episodes long with each episode encompassing approximately 4-6 hours of game time. It uses 3D characters and objects placed on gorgeous 2D hand drawn backgrounds. This combination is quite striking and allows for some unconventional mechanics and unexpected moments.
