Syberia

You are Kate Walker, a lawyer that has been entrusted by the Universal Toy Company to negotiate the takeover of an old luxury toy and automaton factory. The factory’s ambitions, however, are ill-suited to the contemporary economic climate, and the elderly Anna Voralberg, at the helm of the Valadilene factory for more than half a century, has decided to sell up. The day that Kate arrives, Anna is being buried. What is more is that she has left an heir – her brother Hans that lives somewhere in Siberia, and he is now the only person that can ratify the sale of the family business. This is a state-of-the-art, 3D, 3rd person, point & click game, with a smart cursor, inventory and subtitles. The interface and controls are self-explanatory. The puzzles are original, inventory based, and story related. They range in difficulty from the obvious to the moderately obscure, but all are logical, and they can be solved with attention to detail and the ample clues given in conversations and remarks. The world in which you find yourself seems somehow frozen in time, and the graphics are absolutely stunning. Done with a limited palette of grays and browns and mossy greens, they are atmospheric, understated and elegant, reminiscent of paintings by the old masters. You are magically transported to another place and time, to be captivated by the story itself for hours on end.

Blade Runner

The game is based on the famous movie bearing the same title. In the grim world of the future, cities lie in darkness, and nature gave its way to artificial, bio-mechanical production of all creatures - including human beings. Those “artificial humans” are called replicants, and are treated as servants unworthy of being “true” humans. You play the role of police officer McCoy, a Blade Runner, whose special job is to hunt down replicant rebels. But during your investigations, you also get to see their side, and your vision of the world and society begins to change. “Blade Runner” is an adventure game with an emphasis on detective work rather than on puzzles. There are very few “real” puzzles in the game, and the gameplay mainly consists of questioning suspects, gathering evidence, etc. There are also some action sequences, and throughout the game you have the ability to use your gun. Your decisions can (and will) influence the outcome of the story, bringing the game to one of the six possible endings.

Conquests of the Longbow: The Legend of Robin Hood

This second and final game in the Conquests series is another impressive historical adventure. This time it features VGA graphics and uses Sierra’s standard icon-driven interface first seen in KQ5. The player assumes the role of the legendary Robin Hood in his efforts to restore King Richard I to the throne of England. To do so, he must collect enough money to pay the king’s ransom. The game keeps track of the size of Robin’s band, with a small number of opportunities to recruit new members, and a few chances to get them killed. There are various opportunities to launch raiding missions throughout the game, and having a sufficiently large band as well as using an effective strategy are necessary to succeed. Depending on how well the player does, there are a number of endings, ranging from Robin being hanged for his crimes, to being knighted and getting married to Maid Marian. Many puzzles have multiple solutions with varying implications - some more desirable than others. The detailed video-captured animation is fluid and varied and most characters you meet have unique animated portraits.

Black Dahlia

Black Dahlia is a suspense thriller based loosely on the brutal unsolved California murder of Elizabeth Short, nicknamed “Black Dahlia”. Taking place in the 1940s, you play a rookie government agent, Jim Pearson. Jim meets Elizabeth who possesses a strange engraved stone known as the “Black Dahlia”, an artifact coveted by the Nazis as a source of ultimate power. When her brutal murder occurs, the stone disappears. Dennis Hopper, Teri Garr and many other famous actors and actresses star in this cinematic, point-and-click adventure game. Full 360 degree horizontal and limited vertical panning allow you to scan each scene with the mouse. Jim’s in-game notebook acts as a journal as it records everything of importance that he has examined. Black Dahlia has over 60 puzzles dispersed over nearly as many locations. They range in difficulty, style and type including jigsaw, manipulation, code breaking, mazes and object based. The game was quite expensive to produce and it shows in the well-done final product.

Pepper’s Adventures In Time

This point n’ click adventure game is actually an edutainment (entertainment leading to education) title developed by Sierra, who were also responsible for other games such as the Eco quest and Dr. Brain series. The object of this game is to help a little girl called Pepper, solve puzzles based on history and logic, so that she can fix the mess caused by Dr. Fred’s time machine. At certain points in the game, the player is even allowed to control her pet dog, Lockjaw. This is a fun game even for adults.

The Dark Eye

This is an interactive adventure based on the works of Edgar Allan Poe featuring the voice of William S. Burroughs and the music of Thomas Dolby. While experiencing an original Poesque adventure, the player is transported into several of Poe’s most famous works. All of the stories are surrealistically rendered with claymation figures and haunting music. You go through each story twice - first as the victim, and again as the perpetrator. As if that’s not creepy enough, the game also uses as a framing device an original story that is a very intriguing pastiche of Poe mythos. Burrough’s reading of “The Masque of the Red Death” is not to be missed. Gameplay involves clicking on various objects and people to trigger events to advance the story. Despite this limited click-and-watch, the game’s haunting atmosphere and style (with unique claymation actors) make it a must-have for horror fans.

To the Moon

Dr. Eva Rosalene and Dr. Neil Watts have rather peculiar jobs: They give people another chance to live. Literally. There exists a technology that allows doctors to weave artificial memories, such that a patient can request attempts to alter their mind, and wake up with memories of things that didn’t actually happen. This particular story follows Dr. Rosalene and Dr. Watts’ attempt to fulfill the wishes of a dying elderly man, Johnny. In their mission to do so, they traverse backwards through the man’s memories, unfolding his curious life story before their eyes. With each step back in time, a new fragment of Johnny’s past is revealed. And as the two doctors piece together the puzzled events that spanned a life time, they seek to find out just why the frail old man chose his dying wish to be what it is. And Johnny’s last wish is, of course… to go to the moon.

The Inner World

In a round hollow space deep within the earth lives a very peculiar nation of stripe-nosed Asposians. Nearly everything in Asposia is driven by the holy winds of the gods, but recently all of the sacred windwells have become still except one. Now wind is becoming ever more scarce, the tiny flying Fosfos that illuminate Asposia hardly bestow their warming light anymore and the end of The Inner World seems unstoppable. Amidst this vortex of events, the simple court musician Robert – suddenly and unintentionally – holds the entire fate of the world of the winds in his hands. It’s a 2D third-person cartoon adventure with distinctive hand-drawn artwork. Designed in the style of LucasArts adventures, but in a brand new guise, players control the flute-nosed Robert through this inner world of clumsy, bizarre characters.

Legend of Kyrandia 2: The Hand of Fate

This is the second book in the Legend of Kyrandia series. It uses the same design as the first game of the series. This sequel, however, features a much stronger story and a few more difficult puzzles than its predecessor. The main character is a female this time, Zanthia the alchemist (a supporting character in the first game), rather than Brandon. Kyrandia, as usual, is in trouble. This time, the trouble is more than a megalomaniac jester: slowly, piece by piece, Kyrandia is disappearing. Marko (a wannabe mage) shows up with his new assistant, a hand. The hand, through diagrams, explains that they need an anchor stone from the center of the world to keep Kyrandia together. Zanthia is unanimously chosen to go get it. This game has the same beautiful graphics and easy to use point-and-click interface as the first game and was released both on floppy disks and CDrom which adds music and voices.

The truth can’t hurt you, it’s just like the dark: it scares you witless but in time you see things clear and stark. - Elvis Costello
Maybe this time I can be strong, but since I know who I am, I’m probably wrong. Maybe this time I can go far, but thinking about where I’ve been ain’t helping me start. - Michael Kiwanuka
