Adventure Game Scene of the Day — Wednesday 17 December 2014

Long before Kheops’ Return to Mysterious Island,  Southpeak Interactive planned to publish an FMV adventure game called 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. They were going to use the same Virtual Reality engine as in their previous games Temujin and Dark Side of the Moon (which I loved) and writer Lee Sheldon was involved again. A demo was released in 1999 and that was the end of it.  Cry

I find it interesting that the events are only loosely based on the novel and were to take place many years later, same as in Return to Mysterious Island, although in both games Captain Nemo’s Nautilus plays an important part.

I feel like Alice in Wonderland: never heard of this game before.
Well done, Karlok. Thumbs Up

The free demo is still floating around the Internet.

Oh my God, my favorite Jules Vernes book adventure game, and it never really happened? Is that Charles Dance or Bob Odenkirk? Either would have been awesome. This is so bittersweet. Someone make a 20,000 Leagues point and click, please!

A pity.
I actually like FMVs…
(as I also love 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea of course…)

Yeah, FMVs get a bad rep for some reason. I never minded them, though I wasn’t crazy about a lot of games that used them (Phantasmagoria, the likes). I’ll never forget the thrill of seeing actual, flickering, pixelated people moving on my COMPUTER monitor! Even though I did (and still) prefer drawn stuff, they get a lot more hate than they deserve, in my humble opinion.

This looks like it would be cool.

What is it with 20.000 leagues under the Sea and cancellations? David Fincher movie also never left pre-production.

Coktel fullfilled your wish in 1988.  Tongue Here’s a screenshot. Believe it or not, I actually considered doing a 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea midweek with the three games, but decided against it because I thought nobody would be interested.

This does look really cool, might have to try and track down that demo.

I remember after first reading 20,000 Leagues, thinking it should have been called “20,000 Leagues under the sea; looking at fish” as the book is about 60% brilliant and fascinating story and 40% descriptions of marine life!

I had no idea. These are the same guys who made Woodruff, right? But man, 1988 was harsh on graphics, damn Laughing

Yep.

Not at all, they were way ahead of their time: It’s retro-style avant la lettre! Have you seen Ron Gilbert’s Thimbleweed kickstarter project?

Yes, the game looked pretty good for its time, and they used some neat tricks too.

Of course, this is about the Atari/Amiga version. The DOS port was horrible…

To anyone that wants to try the demo. It’s available here:

Seems to work pretty well

What amazes me is the fact that, watching the demo, the production was well advanced and they cancelled it. It’s a shame. It could be a great game.

Is that Charles Dance or Bob Odenkirk?

Looks a bit like them, but I think he’s neither. Charles Dance had red hair and a beard around this time, and BoB Odenkirk had a full head of hair.

Duckman: Can you believe it? Five hundred bucks for a parking ticket?
Cornfed Pig: You parked in a handicapped zone.
Duckman: Who cares? Nobody parks there anyway, except for the people who are supposed to park there and, hell, I can outrun them anytime.
