Adventure Game Scene of the Day — Tuesday 25 November 2014

This is the story of a man named Stanley. Stanley worked for a company in a big building where he was employee 427. Employee number 427’s job was simple. He sat at his desk in room 427 and he pushed buttons on a keyboard. Orders came to him on a monitor on his desk, telling him what buttons to push, how long to push them, and in what order. This is what employee 427 did every day of every month of every year. And although others might have considered it soul-rending, Stanley relished every moment that the orders came in, as though he had been made exactly for this job. And Stanley was happy.

And then one day…

The Stanley Parable (2013) is one of my favorites. A marvelous parody of games and gamers. It’s just you and the narrator talking to you in this vast empty world you have to explore. And what a narrator! Listening to him telling me what to do and making fun of me was such a joy. No real puzzles but choices to make and a great number of different ways to die or end the game, some of them hard to find.

Some people will say the Stanley Parable is not an adventure. Kevan Brighting, the great narrator, said in an interview it was more like an interactive audio play. I disagree, I’d call it a meta-game. Here’s the developers’ description: The Stanley Parable is an exploration of story, games, and choice. Except the story doesn’t matter, it might not even be a game, and if you ever actually do have a choice, well let me know how you did it.

Cool

It’s Steam only. I hate that. But you can play a demo on Steam.

It is an excellent adventure game.
With tons of laugh and perhaps the - best - performance - ever. The narrator IS the game.
The broom closet was my favorite!  Naughty

Yes. People, it is an adventure game. Go play this adventure game!

He’s great, isn’t he. Both the text and the actor’s performance. I heard his normal speaking voice in an interview and he didn’t sound like the narrator at all.

The broom closet was my favorite!  Naughty

Mine is the countdown room with the yes-no buttons.

What?! A narrator-heavy game and I haven’t been informed? How that happen’? I’m so playing this, but I doubt he’ll beat the Al Emmo narrator Wink Tongue

Goodness gracious! I went to youtube and the number of endings, hidden endings, secret rooms is staggering. I found most normal endings (I draw the line at rescuing a baby and a puppy for four hours, thank God other people are less wimpy, so I can listen to the narrator’s comments), but must have missed most of the hidden ones.

He has the sarcasm in common with the Al Emmo narrator. He’s also infinitely better. And I liked the Al Emmo narrator.

Sorry.  Neutral

I think I found all endings. Even some really obscure ones.

Except of pushing these damn buttons for hours with babies cryng, puppies fallin to the piranhas,  etc. That ending I saw on youtube. I am no masochist. Or a saint. Especially when the narrator makes comments like “Do you imagine if I am just kidding and nothing really happens after these hours?” after 3 hours and 50 minutes of continuesly button pushing and running up and down with terrible sounds eating your ears.

I just watched the cheat ending. In the serious room. With the serious table. Did you find that one? Me, not in a million years. Seriously.

Ah, yes. That one too. I never put codes. Everyone else who new TSP simply as a Half Life mode (that’s how it first started) probably did. Hillarious of course. And yes, I am serious.

And I still haven’t found if there is a combination of buttons to deactivate the bomb!!

The confussion ending (follow the yellow line) and the choice ending (pull the plug of the ringing phone), the “Other games” ending, even throwing yourself out of the window, are all really memorable endings. Some are really scary, like the insanity or Bomb one…. Others are touching, with the narrator begging you no to die so that all will not be forgotten….In all sincerity, the most dull one is probably the “yes” ending!!

I refuse to believe the developers have done that! It negates, denies, contradicts everything the Stanley Parable stands for!

Shifty Eyed

Well… maybe not. But I would be very upset. There should be NO way to deactivate the bomb.

You mean the happy one, where Stanley is free to live his life? That’s the first one I found when I played the free mod and I felt disappointed. Smile

Puppies and kittens and serious tables, oh my!

I must replay this GAME and find all the endings (well, most anyway).  I knew there were probably a lot more but after three hours I had to tear myself away to tend to things in the darn “real” world.

I giggled a lot during the whole thing and can’t really say what was my favorite; maybe the narrator because I love smart sarcasm.

Great game!

It’s Steam only.

Call me an old fogey, but I’m not even sure what “Steam” exactly is.
Honestly.

P.S. And I don’t want to know.

So? I don’t know either and I use it anyway.

Honestly.

I believe you.

After playing Gone Home, I still needed a little first-person realtime 3D fix, so I played this over the weekend (I’d been wanting to play it since it came out but that freeware “There Is No Game” “game” made me *really* want to play it).
I must say I enjoyed it a LOT. Very “meta”. Grin
I absolutely LOVE the narrator (and I marvel at the incredible foresight of the developers - practically everything has its unique response).
I’ve always been a fan of breaking the fourth wall, and this game does so constantly.

Be sure to enter the code on the keypad in the boss’s office before the narrator gives it. Tongue
And then go to that office again the next time. Grin

According to this wikia there are 19 endings. I found 15 of them myself, and used that list to find the other four.
Well, the other three. I checked the “divine art” ending on YouTube because I’m not crazy. I’m not pressing a button for four hours while a baby wails constantly. The guy that did it for the YouTube video should probably be put in a mental hospital just for attempting it, let alone for actually completing it. Tongue
I also never would have found the “out the window” ending myself, nor would I have thought to cheat via the console (gotta love that serious room, and that serious table, though).
“Heaven”‘s the other ending I didn’t find myself.

I very much loved the entire “Confusion” ending, the “Countdown” ending, the famous “Broom Closet” and the “Choice” ending.
I consider the “Choice” ending to be the “true ending” for the game. The devs too, imo, or they wouldn’t put the credits after that one.
I agree that the “Freedom” ending is the most boring one. It’s also the first one most people will see, I presume.

Great game, very funny, and a real parody of everything game-related.

And I got my first taste of both MineCraft and Portal too, thanks to this! Cool

Rest assured: there is no way. Wink

Such a great game but I can’t really remember those endings, the good thing it that it’s fast to replay it anytime…

You should play Jazzpunk now!
