Adventure Game Scene of the Day — Tuesday 17 June 2014

I hadn’t heard of Jonas Kyratzes and his Lands of Dream before I read the AG review of his first commercial game, but once I tried it I was sold. Now I have played most of his free games. The Sea Will Claim Everything  (2012) is a mix of magic, mythology, humor, philosophy, literature, parody, and politics.

Underhome is in a state of shock because it was invaded and attacked. Underhome is a house, but also a living being and it panicked. It’s your job to heal the house, get everything working again smoothly and then get out, explore the many islands, talk to magic creatures, discover what happened, why the balance in the region is gone.

Jonas Kyratzes is a great storyteller. The look and feel of the islands is Greek. The wonderful music is Greek too. Every mushroom, book, box, spider web (Bob the Spider™) is clickable. In fact, almost everything is clickable, so there’s lots of stuff to read.  The puzzles are fun and easy, except for a very ingenious one that required out-of-the-box thinking. Where would I be without walkthroughs… Meh

The game was greenlit on Steam a couple of days ago.  Cool

Many praise games by Kyratzes, but I just don’ dig the art style, and his philosophical and political views are questionable. Good to know he’s been greenlit though!

I can understand it when people don’t dig the art style and his political and philosophical views, but why do you call his views questionable? I’m not a communist and I don’t think you need to be one, or even to be interested in politics, to enjoy his games.

Because Communism is very questionable. Jonas often shares his views on public, and I know his games are very personal - much more personal than, say, the games by TenNapel whom many people boycott following his much less questionable views. Of course, I’m not boycotting anything and I’m open to all opinions. I just don’t think I’ll learn anything new or interesting from those games, even if they are light on ideology. Oh, and I read reviews claiming that they are actually full of Marxist references Smile

Jonas Kyratzes and his Lands of Dream

This graphics is familiar to me, but I know it from another Kyratzes’ game.
Always wanted to try one of those, but (of course) didn’t.

Uh.. aren’t all views questionable? Which is why they are views, and not facts?

Some are more questionable, some are less. Communism has a history: it was born, it lasted for 70 years and then it died. So it can be judged using objective factors today, not just some theoretical, subjective points of view. Same with monarchy, or national socialism. Few people will play a game made by a neo-Nazi today, especially if it’s based around his philosophy. I also have a problem playing a game by someone who quotes Trotsky, one of the biggest mass murderers of the XX century.

There are people who believe that communism was not what trully existed in the USSR and East Germany, since this was far away from what communism trully represents, thus believing that communism is still untested.

That was Stalin. Trotsky was not a murderer whatsoever.

You are mistaken. Mass murderers took place during civil war in 1917-1923, when tens of millions of people were killed. At that time Lenin, Trotsky, Dzerzhinsky, Kamenev were at the head of government, they signed countless of death warrants. Stalin was also high on hierarchy, but no near as powerful. He gained true power only after Lenin’s death. His period was also full of repressions, but the worst years were those during the civil war.

It’s an improvised model of communism in a poor Asian country. Always heavily dependent on the Western world, hardly anything like classical dogmas.

I could talk about this for many hours, but I think there is some ruling in the forums against political discussions. To sum up, the bottom line is:

Civil war. That’s the magic word. In civil war, attrocities happen on both sides and it is really difficult to say right from wrong. Especially the Bolshevik army against the white one that followed the revolution against the Tsarist oppression. Trotsky was no saint, but nowhere near the Hitler/Stalin scale. More close to Churchill in the death scale. And tens of millions is a little overexagerrating. No more than 1.300.000 (red army) and 2.000.000 (white army) died. No typhus affected civilians counted of course. (men, I’m glad there is no yeawning smiley around here, or zobraks would have posted it already)

I really like your screenshot Karlok, the artwork is pleasantly bright & colourful & from your description the game seems interesting. I did download & start to play one of Kyratzes’ earlier games but life got in the way & I bought a new PC - I think I’ve still got it backed-up somewhere so might dig it out & give it a shot! Has anyone else played any of Kyratze’s other games?

I really don’t mind a political viewpoint being expressed in a game - it can be interesting & I hardly think that an Indie AG is going to promote any kind of extremism let alone raise enough funds to contribute to a cause! As for the beliefs of the man who made it - is it relevant as we’re commenting on a game yes!

Well, to me it is obvious who was right and wrong in the war between Bolshevik terrorists sponsored by Germany and white army that protected their country. “Tsarist oppression” is such a propaganda term, I didn’t expect to see anyone using it nowadays Smile Russian Empire was one of the most progressive economies of its time and was on its way to constitutional monarchy. Revolution turned it into ruins, gold reserve was looted, a gang of criminals came to power and continued exterminating population and each other. As for the numbers, between 10 and 30 millions of people died in 1917-1923s as a result of terror, hunger and war (full numbers are still unknown). Trotsky was the head of propaganda and one of the ideologists of red terror, just like Goebbels in Nazi Germany.

I can also talk about this for hours, but I really don’t want to. As I said, I’m not with Jonas Kyratzes on communism, but I’m still glad his games are doing well.

Here is the intro to The Sea Will Claim Everything.

I often think about that old metaphor, the one that says we are all islands on a wide sea. Especially these days, now that things are more difficult than before and the world appears to be harsher than we once imagined it to be.

We are all like islands, the philosopher said. Perhaps it’s true. Yet I cannot help but remember an older saying scratched on a cave wall somewhere by a long-forgotten prophet: In the end the sea will claim everything.

The ancient words crash into my mind like waves, waking me from sleep, filling me with feelings I cannot fully understand. We are like islands. Does it mean we are connected? Do we share a common origin? Or just the common fate of sinking?

I did play one of his older games, but I don’t remember much except for the same “kids art” style. Although I’m pretty sure there were no communists there Smile His writing is good, and I actually learned about Kyratzes from his articles and Twitter. I learned that he was also making games only later, so it was like person—>his games transformation to me, not the other way.
