Today’s scene is from China: The Forbidden City (1998). The game was also released on Playstation in 1999 which is the version I have.

You play in 1st person perspective as Superintendent Han Jing hired to investigate a murder in the Emperor’s palaces in 18th century Peking. One of a series of ‘Edutainment’ games produced by Cryo the environments are impressively re-produced with historical accuracy as are the costumes & ‘etiquette’ of the time. I found immersion in this world to be a novel back-drop to an interesting & increasingly intricate plot.

Shortly after it released, I remember seeing a boxed copy of this game in the gift shop at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Apparently everyone was starting to realize that there was a new way to get people interested in art.

I found this game to be difficult because so many of the buildings looked alike. I loved the atmosphere, but I kept getting lost among the various buildings. I have a vague recollection that there was a map, but even that didn’t help. I started the game two or three times, but never did finish it.

I wonder how hard it would be to get it to run now on Win 7.

I guess you’re in the UK, Chrissie.
China: Forbidden City (and most other adventure games from Cryo, Index+, and Microids) were never released on Playstation in the US.
I think Dracula 1 and 2 were the only games from those companies that got Playstation releases in the US.

The PC version of China had a problem with panning being extremely sensitive to computer speed. Only a year after its release, it was almost unplayable on a new (~400 to 450MHz) computer unless you used a PC slowdown utility like Moslo or Turbo. The specs on the box list a 90MHz processor (166MHz recommended). Apparently they didn’t bother testing on a faster computer than that. I doubt Moslo or Turbo would be sufficient on a modern computer—even if the game were played inside an emulator.

Of course if you’re a DOSBox whiz, and get Windows 95 working inside DOSBox, you probably wouldn’t have a problem.

I enjoyed wandering around the vast location for a while until I started to get bored with it about 1/3rd way through when I discovered the map was interactive & I could just transport to anywhere close to where I needed to go! I enjoyed the game a lot more after that! It does seem like there’s no chance of getting this to run on Win 7:

Yes crabapple I am in the UK & when I 1st started playing games I only had a PS1 to play on so do have a small collection of P & C Ags for it (which still works!)

I carried a torch for all games being released on consol for many years as you just load the disc & they play without any of the problems you get on various PC systems. They’re made to play games but unfortunately developers just don’t want to make P & C adventures for them so I’ve given up & just battle on to install, configure, patch etc & play the offerings made for PC!    Laughing

Just use NoScript and everything will be fine.

Many thanks for the link zobraks but I’d already found that the pop-ups & words highlighted as links appeared on all the websites I tried & escalated in intensity to the point that it was almost impossible to access the genuine website content! I’m now guessing that I’m the only one that saw the highlighted links here & obviously had some kind of malware on my system. 2 full scans with Malwarebytes & 2 full virus scans with different antivirus showed up absolutely nothing but on checking recent installations I found this nasty program ‘MMinimumPiriceu’ which on removing has solved the problem!

I bet it infiltrated in your system because you don’t use NoScript in the first place.
